I love Land Rovers, but I've never owned one.
Now its time for a new vehicle...gettin rid of the jeep jk unlimited...
i need something thats good on the highway and good in the snow, i really like the rovers, but im worried about reliability. the rovers from my dads day were mythically unreliable. but could i find one that will run like a champ?
im in college so i cant shell out money for repairs every other week. let me know what u guys thinks:coffee:
its like, if someone has one rover they end up with more and more...

if i could get a cheap one, could i swap a diesel in? which diesel could go in? form the us.

if u could post pics of ur landie, id love to see them

Good Heavens! Those are questions that I've never read before. I bet if you were to scroll through the various threads, you'd never even find anything even remotely related to your questions.

hey, rovers can be very reliable if the one you get has been properly maintained. im on my 3rd rover:Wow1: and im only 1 yr out of college. i had a 99 d2 through my college yrs and it left me stranded ONCE, for an idler pulley that crapped out. so as long as you do preventative maintanence and stay on top of things a LR will last you as long as you want it.

anyways what is your budget? the best disco yrs are 99 discovery series 1 and a 2004 discovery series 2 or thats my opinion on what ive learned over the yrs.

my current truck is a 2004 disco2(white truck) my old truck is a 99 disco2(green truck)

I love mine so far. I've had it for almost 2 months and the only thinngs that have occured are the "3 Amigos"

Everything mechanically is brilliant. Gas milage is just as good as my old lifted Toyota Tacoma. Stay away from Rovers that have overheated, have no consistant serivce records and loose driveshafts.

Mine is a 2004 D2 SE without ACE. It has the 2004 Center locking in the transfer case. If you take care of it, It'll take care of you. That doesnt mean you cant hit those trails and rocks :ylsmoke:

D2's have the diesel in them already but from what I've heard they are rare to find. I think there is one for sale up in Montgomery, AL.

They are quite cheap, look on Craigslist and you'll see what I mean.

I got mine from a trade, but the guy wanted only $9500 for it and it is PERFECT!

Have a look in the "show us your Rover" thread and look around at everyone's rig.

Since you mention you're in school I'm guessing the LR's from your Dads day are DI's and maybe RRC's or P38's--sheesh I'm feeling old!

Someone mentioned that owning a LR isn't something you get talked into, it's something the everyone, even yourself try to talk you out of but you still do it. As cliche as it sounds they aren't something you just own-it's a relationship of the type where you will put way too much into and have to overlook very obvious red flags to get through. They require work and lots of it BUT they are fantastic when they are good. You even enjoy them when they are bad. Spend as much as you can to get the best you can find-do you homework and don't be in a hurry. It took me a year of learning, bugging people for info and looking to find my 64 IIa-and it's a good one. My DI came about a lot quicker and I've got some hurdles to cross but it will be a good one soon. Finally you are going to need a decent budget to keep gas and parts in it-Disco's take premium and lots of it, parts deals can be found and there is a whole community to help out but they do cost more in general so you need to take that into consideration.

Just here...
(1)gettin rid of the jeep jk unlimited...(2)im in college so i cant shell out money for repairs every other week...(3)if i could get a cheap one, could i swap a diesel in? (4)which diesel could go in? (5)form the us.

1) Why get rid of the JKU (newer vehicle, known history, less wear and tear)?
2) See number 2. It wont be every other week but it wont be like owning a much newer Jeep.
3) They are cheap but buying/ wanting one because they are cheap is a mistake. Yes, you can, with a lot of money (see number 2) convert it to diesel power but why? Most Discos are being sold because the cost to keep them going outweighs the vehicles worth (Craigslist listings, etc...). You will spend money on one right away unless buying one with a 100% known history.
4) 200tdi or 300tdi or 4JB1T or Perkins...Notice that not one of these is an American market motor so you are looking at more $$ and limited parts availability (cant go to Napa like the Jeep).
5) See number 4.

All this being said, I love my Disco. Its not 100% reliable (working on that by replacing the random stuff that makes it not reliable as it breaks) and has seen the flat bed a couple of times but it still makes me happy.

Really?

I've been driving pretty much nothing but Land Rovers for over 35 years.
IMO if you're asking if you should get one, then the short answer is no. At least not right now.
Keep your Jeep or get a Toyota for now, get a Land Rover when you're out of school and have a job.

I've had both a '96 D1 and my current truck is an 02 D2 - love em both! You own a rover because you want a rover, and once you have one it's hard to see why anyone would drive anything else (except maybe a LC)

I got my disco over a year ago. It replaced my dodge ram and has actually been more reliable (relatively speaking). It has stranded me twice (luckily both in the parking lot of my appartment) but it was only a minor issue each time(coolant expansion tank let go). I've had a few small things go wrong (window motor and regulator) but it has been great besides that. No expensive repairs. I did grenade the gear diff but that was my own doing :-/ Although they are found relatively cheap, you will have to put some $$$ into it for preventative maintainence. That being said, I'm sure you could sell your jeep and buy a nice disco with plenty of money left over. Owning a rover is the epitome of a love-hate relationship

my range rover broke the same day i bought it. $300 later i was back on the road. I don't know why, but i just love my range rover. i have been in love with rovers for over 15 years.

i can work on any vehicle, so for me all i have to worry about is getting parts.
