What should I do with this?

My dad has this old FC-170 sitting in the back yard. It's in rough shape but its easily restorable. The cool thing is he shoehorned a Dodge 318 and a 727 torque flight with a lock up converter and a warn overdrive behind that.

I'm thinking it would be a great start for a camper of some kind. Any thoughts on where to start?

That pic is 25 years old at least. I'm too lazy to go in the backyard right now and snap another one.

you should give it to me.

duh...

or put a 10' Alaskan Camper on it. Or put an 8' with room for a vintage Honda XL250 between cab and camper.

Just remember that it will always be noisy, rough, bad ergonomically, and difficult to stop (even more so with a V8 providing motivation).

Man..that thing is crying for a cab-over Sportmobile lift type roof camper on the back...kinda like if if you Soenke's back and a bunk over the cab.

Look at the old aluminum "quiltting" on the trailer's front window...brings back some nice memories of some old family campers.

Somewhere on the net is a pretty detailed account of a guy who recently put a Mercedes 617 in an FC and then put a fiberglass camping trailer on the back. I think his story is linked somewhere over on Mercedesshop, I may have linked it here at one time too.

PS, how come that isn't coming on the Relic Run :D
Hey, I know that pic on the front page of that site. :D

That would be fun however it's in no shape to go anywhere.

It hasn't been driven or even moved in at least 9 years. Last time I looked in the cab I found a family of Raccoons living in the battery box behind the seat(no, Im not kidding)

The shifter has a cable going from the Tranny and it's rusted into park.
Although the body is straight(my dad had it restored in the early 80s) it has a huge chunk that they didn't fix right and was all bondo on the front corner. It has since rusted behind the bondo and fallen off.

I think the first order of business will be getting it running and movable. After that I'm going to look for a newer axle combo. Thinking maybe a D60 dually rear end out of a newer Dodge with disk brakes and some sort of D44 or 60 front end with disks. I want to keep the factory gearing of 4:88 because of the overdrive, it will handle 70 MPH with out over revving the engine.

What I would like to do is some sort of a permanent mount camper. I'd like to make a mini-camper/motorhome out of it.
