What should I replace the Hummer H3 with?

Pretty much down to looking at:

2007-2008 Jeep Commander with 5.7 V8
2007-2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 5.7 V8 or 3.0 CRD
2006-2007 Land Rover LR3 with 4.4 V8

Is the Jeep 4.7 V8 worth considering?

I will chime in on the commander, my wife had a Rocky Mountain edition, which mean the 4.7l, QDII, skid plates, tow package.....ect.. I would not have an issue getting another one but would get the 5.7l if towing hands down. I had to move my camper a few miles up the road with it and the 4.7 was painful. Now for the lift I put an R/C spacer lift 2" and duratrac tires and I went every were without the need of out low range. The QDII is an awesome system that will lock up both axels when needed, the only other thing I added was a skid plate for the cats and transfer case. The down side was the fuel mileage, it is really a brick on wheels and this is why we sold it, but man did it go every were. I would pick one up again if I could justify it.

Just here...
I was talking about yanking your 5 cylinder lump and putting in a used late model small block V8....replicating the H3 Alpha

The 5.3L Alpha was the exact same motor/accessories/harness/computers they used in the V8 Trailblazer, Envoy, Rainier, Canyon, Colorado, SSR, and Saab 9-7x. Finding one complete, used, is easy and CHEAP. Plug and play. Then you'd have a Alpha without the cost, and you'd still have the truck you know, like, and trust.

Remember, hot rodding is the American way.

Ha, nothing is that easy. That will require rewiring the entire truck. The VINs will not match up meaning a headache upon future sale. He will have almost as much money wrapped into that truck as just buying a factory V8 truck. Sorry, hotrodding is the American way but its a whole lot more expensive now. You have to retain full OBDII functionality.

For that load range and DD'ing it I'd say the GC CRD would be the best option, but goodluck finding one in that price range. At least up here in canada, the few CRD's they sold are holding their value very very well.

The commander would, but it sounds like you don't want a big vehicle and it is quite large. Fuel economy will be brutal as well, towing or not. If you can find the one with all the off-road goodies it's a decent trail rig as well, just a bit big for most trails. The 5.7L would be the only option for you though, the smaller V8 (the one I drive for a week - rental) was dangerously slow with just me in it, couldn't imagine towing anything with it. And this is someone who tows a 1000lb trailer with a Suzuki SX4 :p
