What Size Tire to Buy?

JPK, would you mind posting a pic of both your trucks showing from the front where the tire ends up with relation to the outer edge of the flair? Thanks a bunch!

Here is a photo of my white Jeep next to a flat black Jeep with a 3.5" AEV suspension, Pintlers and 12.5x35R17 BFG A/T's. BTW, that is my much younger, thinner, fitter but balder brother between the Jeeps.

Here's about the best I have for my Jeep, with 4.5" AEV suspension, Pintlers and 12.5X37R17 BFG A/T's. That is my 11 year old son driving (legally) in the Moab area btw.

I don't have a photo of my wife's Jeep head on. But the 1.5" Spider Trax spacers pull the tires out to the edge of the fenders, not quite s far as the Pintler/12.5 BFG combination. IIRC, the spacers actually pull the tires out about .2" more than the Pintlers, but the oem wheels are thinner, and the oem 255/75R17's are thinner.

On my Jeep, if you drop a plumbob off the fenders it appears as if it will just miss tread (the legal test in MD as I understand,) but I haven't actually tried it.

I'll try to get a photo of my wife's Jeep head on and tail on this evening.

Thanks a bunch JPK_ big help!! So, if my perspective is correct, the AEV Pintlers are 1" wider than stock, and have an additional 10mm of offset, yielding the outside of the tire to be 0.5"(half the additional width) + 0.4"(10mm) for a total of 0.9" further to the outside. Thus making the edge of the tread flush with the edge of the flair.

James- don't paint that white truck ;-) Though it is pretty cool, and I typically am not a fan, but could see the 130 project going that way?!

Oh don't worry. The thought of myself out in the driveway with a case of flat black Krylon is funny though. Brandy doesn't believe in divorce but for that I think she would make an exception.:)

I'm still waiting to see a build thread on the 130.

This has nothing to do with tire size but I would love to see more pic's of the flat black Jeep.

This is the only other photo I have. I took delivery for AEV since they loaded a trailer of Jeep's heading toward NJ and MD and couldn't get hold of the owner. The owner came and got it the day after it was dropped off. The Jeep is heading to Bahrain in another year or so. Apparently the duty is steep on new vehicles but not so bad on a two year old vehicle.

You are welcome.

I'll leave the math to you, but the end result is tread right under the edge of the fenders/flares, maybe a tick outside of the fenders/flares, but very close.

I don't recall if running 12.5" wide tires required an adjustment to the turn stops.

BTW, I was speaking with Jeff Clark of AEV yesterday about a Jeep for my wife and he mentioned that the oem Rubicon tires don't work well on the AEV wheels because the AEV wheels are too wide for the oem tires. "They baloon out..."

100lbs

love the front bumper, who makes it?

That is AEV's bumper. Very strong, excellent fit and finish. Not light though at ~100lbs.

Won't take Warn's Powerplant winch, but accomodates the 9.5's. It would be perfect if it took the Powerplant with it's built in air pump.

She'd kill me but that black is very cool. What in the world is hanging off of the front of your jeep?

That is a UWS hitch hauler with their tool box in it. The box was cut down to be lower to limit air flow interference.

IIRC, on that particular day the box was carrying a couple of shotguns, and two limits of ducks and geese, along with a couple of pairs of waders.

With me and my son and our two retrievers things get tinght in the Jeep, especially when seasons run simultaneously.

I used the box on a trip to Moab, Utah and then Ouray, Colorado with the family in August. No other way for the four of us to pack for that trip, with recovery gear, fishing and camping gear...

It fits into a removable front reciever/tow bracket that AEV made for me and which bolts onto the bumper's recovery points. Six bolts and its off for more difficult terrain.

I have a 2.5 lift and I have mounted both 33 and 35" tires. I just like the way the 35's fill the wheel well better, but I did have to re-gear when I put the 35's on.

Here are pics of both ways.

This is with 33's
