what vehicle would you buy to replace fjz80

8 years ago I started shopping for a ride to replace my 86 4Runner. I compared 3rd gen 4Runners and 80 series TLCs. I ended up buying a 97 4Runner. Two years ago I bought the FZJ80.

If I were to be in the market now, I'd be spending my money on a diesel imported 70 series.

I got myself a 200 series and never looked back, even though I kept my latest 80 for a while, just in case.

Finally sold the 80, no regrets.

Agree with this guy, but we might be a little biased. Within your price range though I think you should be able to find a 100 series in decent shape, but whats more important SUV type cargo space or truck bed cargo space?

i have up overland sticker on my 80 from the previous owner, i think he did the trip he was traverse city. your smart to keep it out of the salt thats for sure. its funny living in washington i'm see cars that i haven't seen in years still on the road. an mid 80 toyota tercel comes to mind.

Ah nice, I wonder who that was. I grew up by Traverse City, I actually bough my 80 at Traverse Motors in 2001. I spend more time in the west than I do in Michigan these days and yes, gotta love all the older cars on the roads. I hate rust, no wait, I loathe it. ;-)

An oddball add to that list of good recommendations would be an '86 Isuzu Trooper diesel. They pop up from time to time and are economical, plucky little rigs. I had both an '87 and '88 Trooper and did a lot of big trips with those things. The '88 and newer 2.7 liter 4 cylinder with a 5 speed manual was pretty cool. I could get 24mpg on the highway and they haul a lot of stuff. Not much aftermarket for that era Trooper though. I always liked them because they reminded me of the elusive 70 series Cruisers and were dirt cheap.

Its a hard call but I would say try the 100s, then move on from there. You will be hard pressed to find a 70s in the USA for cheap. I would say that I wish we got the BJ73 and BJ74 instead of the FJ Cruiser. To me they are everything the Fj Cruiser should of been with a removable top and a true land cruiser ! ...

i just saw an ad for 88 with 4 cylinder that didn't look beat to ******** with 200,000 on it. i'm tempted but you can get a lot of montero for the money.

Funny, I thought you had asked about Troopers but I was confusing another thread in chat. Montero's are great values and are more comfy/better handling than Trooper II's.

You must get the same car in replacement ..You are currently using a big car and now just the big car could satisfy you. SO get the same giant car made by any company...( I am talking in terms of shape and size) .

Smells like Babblefish translation to me :p
