what vehicle would you buy to replace fjz80

What about the 01+ Monteros? They are nice suv's and pretty cheap $ for what you get.
I like the off-road focused luxury, and the Ifs/irs has great travel and seems geared for offroad.
It's also got great room inside thanks to being a unibody.

None are going to be the quality or durability of the 100 series though.
I just don't know if you can find one in your price range that is clean.

Really? 25 years old?

In '90, I bought a 72 Blazer (18)
In 94 I bought a 77 CJ7 (17)
In 97 I bought an 87 4Runner (10) I drove it for 170K
In 2007 I bought a 97 4Runner (10) I drove it for 170K and still have it)
In 2010 I bought a 92 FJ80 (17)

I have a thing for old rigs. I have no desire for a new anything. I'd rather have a Toyota diesel with 200K on it than anything new. I miss the days of steel dashes and non plastic interiors.

You can't replace an 80, an 80 will replace you.

Naturally the next step is a 100 series.

So much truth in this statement.

I've got my eyes open for a nice unmolested, dealer maintained 2006 LX470. If I see one I may just jump on it and buy it for my wife. Might eventually turn that into an expo truck. #pipedreams

In the meantime I will continue to pile the miles on my 80.

And I'm a Land Rover owner.

Honestly I couldn't afford the 80 I wanted and got an awesome deal on my disco.

V-6 Monteros are great. Stay away from four cylinder ones unless you like replacing heads. I've had six Monteros and two Hiluxes and now I have my 94 FZJ80. The 80 is by far the best of the bunch.
Just my .02

X2 on the Trooper. I had an '88 with 150K until I found my FZJ80. Never had it stuck. Got seriously abused for another 30K after I sold it to a high school kid and still runs (pretty tired now though.) He pulled out 3/4 ton 4x4's with it in the winter. They came with a factory skid plate and rear locker. Build quality was fantastic. Every bit as good as Toyota. The 4ZE1 2.6 motor had some cylinder head issues but mine was trouble-free. They are outstanding vehicles but 1700 for one with 200K is a lot.

I looked at a few '01+ Monteros before I bought my LC. They're awful nice. Especially the Limited models. Can be bought pretty cheap too. Not much aftermarket available.

Ultimately, if it were me, I'd stick with the 80:)

Just here...
G wagon? Unimog?
Did you even read?

Right on the first, wrong on the second.

If you have an 80 series, youll want to get something huge like the 80 series that you are used to. As long as you know that the trucks you are looking at are smaller in overall size, youll be fine. If all youre getting is a nice drive and a weekend camping truck, just get a Tahoe or something. They are cheap. Parts are everywhere and they are cheap. They run forever (LSx motors are fantastic). They will run off of the cheapest available gas. The junkyards are littered with all versions so getting upgraded axles and things is easy. Oh, did I mention that they are cheap? I would rather one of those than an 80 (but thats because I hate 80 series Cruisers and dont understand why everyone here has such a hard on for them).

budget: $6-7000
space is important
weekend camping

-4Runner
-Xterra
-100 series LC (99-00 probably in your price range)

My list exactly. I've had a 2000 Xterra really liked it, but I love my 98 4Runner, even though the xterra was more reliable. Now we are looking at 4 Gen 4Runner or the newest Outback for the wife.

Had the same dilemma with my wife and ended up with the Outback. Unless your wife goes off-road quite often, I would go Outback. Superior MPG, better handling, easier to get in and out of, always in AWD (which IMO, is safer, although the 4th Gen has AWD capabilites. Major drain on MPG, though), and plenty capable with 8.7" ground clearance. Unless we're going deep into the woods, we always take the OB.

Funny is that she really doesn't like to go offroad but does it for me, (she gets motion sick very easily). Her main thing is that she likes the higher seating position and I'm working on getting her over the "wagon" looks. She is slowly coming around, now I just need her to take a test drive. We are waiting until fall to make the move. Thanks for the insight, I'm cool with wagons, when we were married I had a VW Quantum wagon.

Sounds like my wife. We can't even go for a drive (on-road) in the canyons without her leaning the seat back and going to sleep. For what it's worth, when we got the Outback (going from an SUV), the car-sickness subsided a little bit, I think due to the less body roll going through the curvy canyon roads. As far as the seating position, my wife likes it higher as well. She has the Outback's as high as possible (I hit my head when I get in to drive). It's not as high as the 4Runner's, per-se, but not bad at all. You're definitely up over the "regular" cars.

I have this same dilemma. My 80 has been great, but I think it's time for a newer ride. Im looking seriously at the GX 470. Good power, super nice riding, reliable, and the aftermarket is improving. I followed one through a 5 rated trail at Moab and it went everywhere my lifted, locked 80 did. Prices are coming down, especially in Dallas, since every soccer mom has one.

so decided to keep the 80. selling an 80 from the midwest in the pacific northwest is not easy. so i'm going to keep and see if the rust kills it before the head gaskets gives up if not ill have to make a decision but for now its fine. thanks for all your help.
