What would you do in my situation? (*$&*ed by dealership)

So, I'll start with the fact that I'm pretty well beyond angry right now, but I need to sort out a solution more than I need to be angry, so let's proceed.

Background info (quick version), I'm from New York, left my life there behind to travel full time, been in Europe for 6 months, decided to make my trip an overland one and ordered myself a Defender to fulfill that roll.

Went to Canterbury Land Rover, ordered myself a brand new Left Hand Drive Defender 9.5 weeks ago, was given a delivery date for 10 weeks later, two weeks beyond normal because of LHD, so 17 October, 4 days from now.

Fast forward to today and again, short version, after pestering my salesman for a confirmation of a delivery date, I get told that my truck was never built, in fact it won't be for another 10 weeks, although he's going to try, nice guy that he is (*#*$&(#(@*&$(#*&$#@) to see what he can do on Monday.

So, like I started with, I'm PISSED, but I need to figure out a solution and could use some help since I know that I probably won't be thinking 100% clearly anytime soon.

My thoughts:

I'm not completely married to the idea of a new vehicle, although I really do prefer it. I'm converting this into essentially my home for the next few years (bed in the back) so I think that I will have an easier time "bonding" with something that hasn't been "used" by someone else before. So ideally I buy something unused, or very very lightly used if not off the showroom floor. Assuming I go the used route, who would you all recommend as dealers? Also any tips on "clean" cars on the market?

LHD vs RHD: I've obviously been driving left hand drive cars my entire life and the 15 minutes I spent test driving a RHD car felt strange, but I'm sure it's something I could come to terms with. So this isn't the end of the world, but I'd prefer LHD.

Utility vs Station Wagon: I really wanted a Utility, but I could probably come to terms with a station wagon, but I'd rather a utility, I think they look better and I want to black out all of the rear space anyway.

Telling my dealer to sodomize himself with something rusty and jagged and finding a new salesman: I don't want to write him anything right now, again, angry, but on the off chance that I decide to order another factory car, I am almost certainly going to tell him to go &$#* himself (is cursing allowed here by the way? I'm new) and order from another dealership seeing as it makes no difference with my delivery date.

Oh, also I need to buy the truck in the UK. It's the only place in Europe that I can register it as a non-resident. Truth be told if that weren't the case I would have already bought a used Land Cruiser in Germany. To be honest though, I prefer the Defender, reliability be damned. It looks and feels the part, so please help me sort this mess out.

I think that's everything. I would really appreciate any help/advice, I'm going to go get drunk now.

Feel your pain, we went through several hours of stealership BS when we went to buy a new Defender, got all the details sorted etc etc just about to sign on the line when I asked about delivery dates and was told at least 3 months. Never went back and never will. UK customer service can be absolutely shocking at times and Land rover are especially crap.

I would think you would be better off buying a good used vehicle, at least you can see and touch it before you lay out any money.

Do they have any of your money? If not and time is tight, you might check other dealer inventories to see what is available now. You might even get a good deal on stale inventory.

Contact Foley Specialist vehicles or Nene Overland both in the UK and buy something they have in stock. They can then modify it to your specs. Probably the best two places in the UK. You should be able to get a new or nearly new from them.
RHD is no big deal once you drive it for a day or so. I drive one here in the States nearly everyday. But both Foley and Nene usually have Some LHD available.

Withdraw and get a Used one

Dump the sale and get your deposit back. Trust me I had a 2005 TD5 for the last 5 years and its BETTER than a Puma TDCi ... then take DiscoTdi's advice and RUN to Nene Overland or Trek Overland or Foley's and buy one of their in stock new or used LHD Defenders or even a renovated military used LHD Defender. If you are going to live in it get a cheaper one and spend the rest on wine, cigars and Guiness. :coffee:

Check again on getting a Toyota from Germany or other parts of Europe. You can easily import it into the UK and then do your rego as a non resident.

F that Toyota noise. Don't let one bad sales experience ruin your dream of driving THE best and iconic overland vehicle, the Defender.

Yeah, I have been thinking that maybe it's an omen to stay away from the puma engine.. The thing is that my salesman was perfect in the beginning, and even for a month after the order as I made some changes, but it seems he wasn't actually doing anything with my emails. Oh well.

I left a deposit, but it was on my AMEX card. So even on the chance that the dealer refuses to refund it, American Express will give me my money back :ylsmoke:

Thanks, I didn't know about Foley, will check them now.

Nene is actually doing my prep work, I have been in touch with them since I placed my original order. I guess this gives them the opportunity to sell me a car also..

I'll check Trek also, thanks.

It's funny you guys say that. It was actually bad sales experiences that stopped me from buying the Toyota in the first place. Two salesman in Germany didn't follow up about how I might buy used vehicles in their possession and then I went into a dealership in England to talk about some options and the saleswoman was horrible.

For ex military you could, of course, investigate a TUM or one of the many other choices in set up from Blanchards. They do good work and a good ex mil truck avoids all the fancy plastic and electronics they put on the Pumas. For the money you can end up with a much better and with an XD a considerably stronger truck than a brand new one.

Then again, before going the ex MOD route you might want to investigate the laws regarding export of ex MOD equipment. Opinions vary but it seems the rule now is that any time you take MOD surplus equipment abroad you need a military equipment export license regardless of current use or how many owners since HM's finest. Its not too big a hassle but you'll probably be returning once a year for your MOT.

Get money back and kick the dealer to the curb.

Buya good used truck.

Spend extra money on making the truck the way you want it and on the trip of a lifetime.

The end....

Drop the dealer ASAP. Anyone who doesn't take my business serious doesn't get my business. I use to be like you, wanting a new vehicle, not 1 that has been abused by someone else. But after a while I have realized that if you do your home work and know what to look for (typical signs of trouble) you can get some really good deals on used vehicles.

I still can't get past the "I left my wife in NY" to travel Europe ;) I can't see my wife agreeing to that.

Can't help with a vehicle... but I certainly hope it works out... and quickly.

EDITED TO DISREGARD... ******** I can't read now makes more sense :) GOOD LUCK !!!!

I think he said "life" not "wife" but I bet it would have been a more interesting back story if it was wife.

As for the OP Good Luck on finding what your looking for.

When I was at the solihull factory a couple months back - there were thousands of Land Rovers all lined up. I inquired about it and they said they were having supplier issues with getting enough wheels. So basically all of the vehicles were mounted on the incorrect or spare wheel/tires out in the yard.

They also mentioned they were going to have a huge headache figuring out which vehicle needs which style of wheel and tire....
