What's ownership and maintenance for a Mercedes Benz T2/Vario like outside of Europe?

Hey folks,
I recently saw a nice 814D single cab Allrad 4x4 for sale. It seems like an ideal platform for fullsize (but not huge) vehicle. I have a 4x4 sprinter in the US, and it's nice but not great off road. I could also use an expedition platform in SE Asia where I work a lot of field projects. However, neither of these places seem particularly friendly places to own one as there would be no native support.

For anyone who owns one, what's it like? What's it like as a daily driver or as a live in expedition vehicle?

I have the 4x4, it`s a fairly rugged truck and a good crossover between sprinter and full sized! Your Sprinter wil be lighter to drive and more car like, but the Vario will still be going when the sprinter is dead. These do intergalactic mileages and mercedes has the best parts network in the year.
