I know this is an old thread but these things are pretty cool looking lifted, especially on the 35s. Just checking out the prices with the 5.7, not great prices but not bad either. I think one might be alright for a lite expo, or hunting rig. Seems enough room to store gear and sleep, and should have the ability to cover most hunting situations. Granit it's not a truck, but could double as the family trip rig as well.

And on a side note, while it's not as capable as the JK, it's price is a little better, so could be nice option for some. I'm defiantly considering one.

I just picked one up this weekend and while it is not a wrangler, it has a crap ton of space in it and the little messing around climbing dirt piles and stuff I have done in it has impressed me coming from a lifted XJ. I got the one with electric limited slip and that and the traction control do get it done. Even on the mall tires that came with it I never found the limits of traction. I did find the limits of clearance once however... and there is a cat right there in a sensitive spot that no doubt costs $300,000,000 to replace. I got this for family adventure weekends and so seating capacity was the driver for me but I do think its a jeep where it counts despite its chrome. A two inch lift and some real tires maybe a shield for that cat, are all I plan for it and I expect that will get me anywhere but the rock trails.

There is an aftermarket skid-plate that will cover the cats and transfer case out there. I for get the name of it but I had it on my wife's commander and it was thick. Look at the jeep commander forum for it.

Add an auxiliary tank, OME lift and some protection to a Hemi equipt QDII and you are set! I've had many comfortable family trips to Texas from Cali, and expo trips in DV and the Sierras. I'm an original owner since 09 and it's a keeper.

I own both a 2006 Commander Hemi / Limited w QDII and a 2008 Wrangler JKU.

We use the commander mainly for long road trips, and heading to Colorado in the winter. The extra space inside is nice, and we do use the third row pretty frequently. This thing is awesome in snow / ice and the few times I've been offroad in it otherwise it always shined. It also does great towing the EVO1 trailer and zooming up hills in the mountains without any issues. However, it isn't lifted (yet) so I know its limitations. I do plan on adding a lift to it in the next few years and probably some 33" tires just for a better stance and use if I take it to Colorado in the summertime.

There were initially more options available for the Commander, but with the limited market it seems like alot of the vendors stopped making kit for it (bumpers, gas tanks, etc.) Although recently (as seen above with the black Commander) some higher range lifts are available now, but they are very pricey, although very tempting as I love the look of that Commander. Maybe some day!

The JKU on the other hand is a dog, it won't get up and go unless I'm going straight downhill with a tailwind. But it will go anywhere, and that's why I spent the money on it first for the lift, tires, winches, etc. It is my daily driver and I smile every time I climb up in it.
