Both Jeremy and Mike prompted me to update what we have done with 'Otis'
We do both extended Overland trips and competitive endurance rally.
Otis is a diesel with no intent to be neutered by getting the 'fix'

Decided to edit this post. We have added a lot of stuff to Otis since we started coloring outside those pesky yellow & whites. For local trips almost none of it is needed. All we had when we started out was a full tank of diesel, a full sized spare tire, and a lot of route planning. As we ventured further our desire to live of-grid for two weeks added gear. Also felt the need for self recovery and communication as we were way beyond cell phone range. Otis has proven to be very capable, to get our driving skill set up to speed we have taken many classes like the attached photo. Suggest anyone wanting to do similar search out local off-road clubs. Clubs run the continum of rock climbers to long distance overlanders to those who do local weekend trips. Also try to find events like www.overlandexpo.com who host events where you can see what others have done prior to spending your money/time. Our build is for what we do, competitive off-road rally and long distance overlanding. Have fun and hope to see y'all on the trail!

'Otis' was fortunate to spend a couple of days this summer with Emily Miller learning navigation, and getting a 'Driver Skills Day' for driving off-road. We have not entered the Rebelle but will be closely following Lisa Wolford and Sandy Conner in Hoehn's Cayenne.

A few friends of mine and I recently bought a 2004 S and will be doing some light outfitting during the next few months. If has the air suspension, which we are keeping. Planning to go 265/65 and build some sort of roof rack. This one has the OEM rear spare tire carrier, so we will see how we can make use of that with larger tires.

It does not have the AOTP. I was wondering, is the disengagable sway bar something that is feasible to retrofit if we found a wrecked Cayenne with it?

We're just getting started with this so there will be a lot of questions coming... I've enjoyed all 40 pages of this thread so far.

Here are a couple of pictures from the Texas AVID Texas Fall Outdoor Expo a week ago outside of Llano, TX.
I mounted my Ham radio to the rear cargo barrier and used the Proclip GPS mount for the radio head and put the GPS on the seat bolt pedestal. I just had to get new mounting pieces.

The bug out rack worked well giving me a nice table for cocktail hour. I moved the shovel carrier to back of the tire carrier after the trip and will put a
2 1/2 gallon Scepter water can in that position.

As much as we like the low end torque of our diesel - sometimes wish we had a petrol engine. We are limited to most, not all, of North America where ULSD is available - Central & South America are off limits for us. We are limited to 255/55/18s as any larger would impinge on out trubo inter-coolers. For roof racks the Yakima Towers are not working out, hoping soon to be replaced with Front Runner gear. Would suggest looking at Rennlist for advice on retrofitting disengagable sway bars:

The 955 has a different system than Otis has, with tracks in the roof that seem to be fairly easy to mount whatever to with the use of a slider car and a bolt. The easy option would be to find some OEM rails and crossbars, I suppose. I don't know how beefy the OEM parts are; I think we will probably make something that can clamp into the track. The car is 2000 miles away and I'm not the one who will be doing that work.

Problem with the Yakima is not mounting to our OEM rails. Issue is that the crossbars do not stay secure sliding left to tight. Also the basket mounted to the crossbars also slides left to right. We have taken them to a Yakima dealer to check the install with no issues found. We have never overloaded the basket, still have the issue. They probably work well sticking to flat paved roads as a consumer grade product - not so good off-road. Both Front Runner and Rhino Rack design for off-road use.

The only item on the roof rack is one full size spare and a set of Maxtrax. They are only there when taking a trip. Would be interesting to get a weight fully loaded for a trip. With a payload of 1,301 lbs even with the body armor do not believe we are near it, definitely not over. Will have to look into finding a place to get weighed when heading out on a trip.
