Tire swing-out with two 20l Scepter cans, Trash-a-Roo, and additional gear as needed
Photo from doing the WABDR from Oregon to Canada. We keep rotating our KO2s for three season and Hakkapeliitta's for snow & ice racing.

I've been slowly building up my 2015 CD for mild off road usage. I've added a Eurowise 2" lift, fitted 265/65R18 BFG KO2's on Alpha Grenad wheels, DirtCom swing out tire carrier, Eurowise winch plate w/o a winch as a recovery point, the complete underbody protection kit (skid plates and rock rails) from Eurowise, removed the rear seats and made my own sleeping platform. I've installed a 50qt ARB fridge/freezer on it slide, and made a cabinet to house a small microwave oven. I'm using a EcoFlow Delta 2 solar generator as my secondary power system. I've added a ham and GMRS radio, and iPad Mini to a Ram Mount system that got attached to the front center dash.

I picked up a Crux PCM interface module so I can run both a front and rear camera (currently my rear camera is blocked by the swing out tire carrier). I haven't figured out how to run the front video/power cable into the cab from the engine compartment. Does anyone have a solution?

I'm also wanting to add the Titan Fuel Tanks Trail Trekker II 12-gallon transfer tank the sits behind the spare tire. I haven't been able to get any sales person to get their heads around the 5x130 lug pattern verses the Jeep pattern used on the JK/JL Wranglers. Seems doable; looking for a dealer that has one in stock so I can do a quick fit check.

A friend of a friend brought a 2016 Cayenne diesel on our trip to the White Rim Trail last Fall. We also took it on Fins N' Things and I was really impressed with how well it did, it definitely received a lot of double takes from people we ran into.

For the sake of theorizing, if you were signing up for a North African rally spanning Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, and you wanted to choose the most reliable, fuel-efficient and budget friendly Porsche Cayenne, which year and model would you go with?

Obviously spare parts availability would be extremely limited, so I am leaning toward a gas V-6 - but interested to hear comments.

A North American diesel is not an option unless modified to accept ROW diesel and Add-Blue delete. Also depends on what type rally is being run - for example high speed is not required for TSDs. - Consider purchasing a ROW diesel over there first. For NA Cayenne's a well cared for and sorted early petrol model w spares if shipping across the pond. Would not consider anything newer than a 958.
Our NA 958 diesel has been very reliable - 148k principally off-road miles and still going strong. That said have enjoyed our petrol Ineos Grenadier, purchased for extended travel south of the border.

In my educated Cayenne experience, I'd recommend a 958 (2011+, and don't get the first year, so let's say a 2013 would be good) 3.6 V(R)6 NA (VW engine). 958 lost something like 500-700lbs from the previous 957 due to changes with the transfer case, and a 958 drives a lot like a robust car vs a heavier truck, and is impressively spry even with the NA VR6. Also, the engine bay has plenty of room to access components (unlike a V8/V8 TT, or Diesel).

Otis' 958 diesel is awesome, but like my 958 V8 TT, it's a whole lot more complicated than the basic VR6.

it's a roadbook navigation rally - so yes more like TSD, although I suspect they may be some more faster sections...

I am still trying to decide what makes more sense - buying in USA and shipping, or buying in Europe. Insurance and registration being the major showstoppers in Europe..

How worrisome is the transfer case issue on a 958 6 cyl? I am assuming I will need to find one that has had the transfer case replaced already.

I haven't had any t-case issues with my 958 V8TT, although I've read about some having issues. Unsure if the VR6 models are having issues or not.
