Which HD Truck?

If you had to buy a used gas powered HD truck (F250/350 Ram 2500/3500, Chevy/GMS 2500/3500) which would it be, and which engine/powertrain combo?

Depends on what I was using it for. Most likely I'd either get a Chevy 2500 with the 6.0 or the Ford F250 with the 6.2. I've had both in work trucks and they had zero problem dragging around a 10k trailer with 1-2k in the bed.

I'm a GM fan so I will echo EcoBoosted. As much as I hear about the issue with GM's IFS I've never talked to anyone who had a failure. I put 500k miles on 2 GM IFS systems (granted SUV's not pickups) and didnt have a single issue and I loaded them pretty well. I suspect it's more about the guys that "want" the solid axle (had 2 of those too w/o any issues, but who knows, maybe I just got lucky.

Also i know you said you want gas but i would look at the price/mpg you will get depending on how heavy your build plan is. As expensive as used diesels are the mileage might offset that price differential.

Good luck!

I'd pay attention to transmissions and go with the lowest rear axle ratio you can find. The Ram 66RFE that went with the 6.4 was not great, but the 8 speed ZF transmission starting in 2019 is awesome. I think Ford had a lighter duty transmission for its gasser 250s starting in 2017 or 18. Go with the Ram 4.10 gear ratios or the Ford 4.30 if you can find them. Skip the Ram 2500 coil spring rear suspension for truck camper usage, strictly towing is fine though. I'm not as familiar with the GM offerings but I believe the 6.0 is considered to be very reliable albeit not terribly powerful or efficient.

Maybe more HD than you want but I just bought this. I also added a full Kelderman 4 link air ride with a 3H controller. It is a game changing mod. Front and rear ride so nice when empty. This is a pic at the Kelderman factory where it was all installed. Skirted bed is from CM. IMG_4357.jpg

either a Ford or Ram. But I would wait until my budget was about $50K or so. Ford with a 7.3 gasser for the win and Ram with 6.4 in second place.

So your saying you would only buy new? I have seen how much HD gas trucks depreciate, which is one of the reasons I asked the question, I have a pretty good idea based on experience owning new 3/4 tons which one I would buy, I was curios if the choice changes with some miles and a few years on them.
