Which propane camping fire

Honu, you would have to call their 800 number about the chips.
They do look like they would slosh around if you did not carry it level.

I think their only purpose is to simulate coals, and they do that quite well.

When I get out, I am going to get a comparison video with a real fire and this unit.

Thanks for the videos and other info on this unit. I just received mine and am pleased to see how well built it is and how well it works - it really cranks out the heat when needed and for fire bans or just a quick no mess fire, it's perfect!!!

I was against these at first when I saw them a year or so back for the first time until I saw this thread a few weeks back.
I count the number of times my two sons and I when they were little that we could not have a fire, and most recently a few years back, and these make a lot of sense to me now.

Nothing like wanting to have a campfire at night and you cannot due to a fire restriction going on.

I also agree how well these are built, and I like the way the hose stores on the unit without having to disconnect it.

I used the chips the first couple of times but ended up tossing them out, they were more of a mess than they were worth to me.

My initial impression of this fire, while sitting outside enjoying it as I write, is excellent. There's no question this kit is top quality. I was skeptical that any propane fire could replace the ambiance of a great roaring wood fire. The little bit of "con" that comes with any propane fire is far outdone by the ease and simplicity of the Campfire In a Can, and the end result is a a fire that is actually pretty big. Honestly, the flame is pretty robust and I can see running this thing at half power under most conditions and being satisfied. Even if I had guests that wanted that "big fire" feel I don't think there would be any complaints.

It's heavier than I thought it would be, but I count that as a plus because everything from the packaging to the stowage to the operation makes you certain that every aspect was contemplated an intended. I have no doubt this piece of gear will get years of use in and outside of my rig (my backyard fire pit is staring at the Campfire In a Can with jealous eyes right now).

My only test will be to run it at full blast for max time with a 5lb tank on Sunday so I can get a sense of what to expect on an extended trip.

A++ Highly recommend - shipping/customer service was also top notch.

Agree on all counts. Please report back on the 5LB tank duration and flame level setting. Pretty cool unit indeed for what it is.

Glad you like it, and one thing I forgot to add was the packaging.
They recommended to save the two styrofoam inserts to help out with transportation when it is all bundled up.
I saved mine, and will use them.

Looking forward to your 5 lb bottle test, as I may also bring that one along with the addition of the new 11 lb fiberglass one I bought last week.

Someone over on Mud's camping section in a thread on the Camp Fire In A Can thread I started there last week suggested the Camp Chef fire ring too.

I do not see the specs on the size on their site, but it looks a lot bulkier and does not have built on storage for the propane hose.
I do not mind paying more for a quality unit like the Camp Fire In A Can when everything is self contained when it is time to put it away, plus it is pretty compact.

I made the right choice getting this one.

I am definitely hanging on to the packaging. Looks like it will keep noise and vibration to a minimum during transit.

Question for propane experts:

If I ran the fire ring max on a 1lb coleman tank with no wind would the results be significant enough to extrapolate and expected yield from my 5lb tank? This thing burned for a LONG time last night on a 5Lb tank I estimated to be only 25% full. I've got things to do and convincing the wife and daughter to let me stare at a fire all day might be tough. Wondering if I can streamline the testing.

Used the "Campfire in a Can" for the first time this year yesterday, it was very windy and it worked great. Did not have to worry about blowing embers going into the dry grass that was nearby. It's going to be a very dry year here in the west and there is going to be fire bans for sure, these propane fire pits make sense period.

My brother has the Camp Chef brand and I have used it a few times before getting my CIAC and it is a decent product, has the typical Camp chef construction. At less than half the cost of the CIAC it is a good choice but it does not have as nice of features that I wanted, for many it will be more than adequate IMO.

Maybe OJ should do a comparison test on all the options out there, I see this as a piece of equiptment that will be considered by more people in the future.

Edit: I use the styrafoam packing to help protect the ceramic logs when transporting, it does get black from the soot that gets deposited on the logs, have a pair of cheap work gloves for handling the log that I just leave with it. Also made a box from plywood and had it linex to transport it in (can also use it to set the CIAC on if I desire a little more height). The whole setup got a good workout this weekend and came through with flying colors.
