ALex (I'm not sure if that's your name) if you'd like I can send you the EXIF on the shots- along with the RAW files if you are interested- take a look at the times when those pictures were captured.
One of the most exhilarating and breathtaking aspects of sunrise is the miracle of light that takes place in the few minutes before the sun breaches the horizon. It is truly amazing. Both those shots are taken on a tripod that stayed in one place for several minutes. The cropped (later in time) picture has a 3 stop hard grad and a 2 stop soft grad sandwitched together and also has a much higher exposed foreground that I cropped out.
It is not the same photograph processed differently (I think that is probably what you meant).
If you want, I can post all 15-20 exposures I took at the same spot, fingers freezing, teeth chattering, but my heart aglow with the beauty of the UP.

Joash keep doing what you're doing. There are critics everywhere, you're doing great and your images reflect that, you certainly don't need to answer to anyone. Keep on shooting!!

 Some straight out the camera RAW (today's 'negatives')- no cropping, sharpening, tumeric, or Super Secret South Indian masala...
(jpeg conversions of the .NEF files):

All on a Nikon D90 at 200 ISO, 18-200 VR- and no grad filters.

Joash, are these shot mostly taken along the the shore of Whitefish Bay? I'm trying to place the picture of the river, is that the mouth of the Taquamenon?

Yup- 'Tis the mouth of the Taq- right off of 123.
We drove up to mission hill cemetary to see the fall colors and got lucky enough for a calm sunset and sunrise at the mouth of the river- before the snow on Sunday morning. :Wow1: Crazy weather you got up here.
