ALex (I'm not sure if that's your name) if you'd like I can send you the EXIF on the shots- along with the RAW files if you are interested- take a look at the times when those pictures were captured.
One of the most exhilarating and breathtaking aspects of sunrise is the miracle of light that takes place in the few minutes before the sun breaches the horizon. It is truly amazing. Both those shots are taken on a tripod that stayed in one place for several minutes. The cropped (later in time) picture has a 3 stop hard grad and a 2 stop soft grad sandwitched together and also has a much higher exposed foreground that I cropped out.
It is not the same photograph processed differently (I think that is probably what you meant).
If you want, I can post all 15-20 exposures I took at the same spot, fingers freezing, teeth chattering, but my heart aglow with the beauty of the UP.
