I've been putting a lot of thought into how to build a "do everything" bike. I really like Scott Quiring's craftmanship and like the idea of a "monster-cross" bike, cyclo-cross geometry that will fit 29er mountain bike tires. I prefer single speed and fixed gear bikes, so I would probably have it built with horizontal dropouts, but I also like the White Industries ENO hubs that would allow me to use regular vertical dropouts in case I ever wanted to run gears. I haven't talked to Scott yet but I would imagine he could add rack mounts to the frame. I'm thinking with cyclo-cross geometry I could run road rims laced to mountain bike disc hubs or a fixed gear hub and use drop or flat bars for the road. Then I could lace up some disc mountain bike wheels and use a flat or riser bar for everything else. The rack mounts would accomodate light touring or commuting.

Jim,

How about sliding dropouts? Or I've heard good things about split-shell EBB. I like the simplicity of track ends I currently have, but for my next bike (most likely Ti--and will go with either Quiring or Blacksheep) it will probably be sliding drop outs.

Sliding dropouts are a definite possibility, the Quiring monster cross frame here shows them.

I had a Salsa Jaun Solo frame with a Bushnell eccentric BB and I could never get it to stop squeaking.

Here's an interesting Salsa fork I just found that might make it's way onto this project if I decide to build it.

I have those sliding drop outs on my SS 29er, not a big fan of them, braking can cause the wheel to slip, sanded the paint of to try and get them to grip better but no luck. anyone seen any other alternatives?

Thanks for the feedback, being 200+lbs and usually riding single speed or fixed I know how things like to move around.

I guess I'll be building something soon, I just don't know what yet. I thought I'd start with a new set of wheels and see where it goes from there! :sombrero:

I'm finally starting an off road touring bike build. I will be having a custom frame built by Scott Quiring. I'm really exited about this build! I've had a lot of high end stuff but this will be my first custom frame. I'll be starting a build thread soon.

I am ....

and I ordered it a few weeks ago. What is it I hear you ask. Well after a great deal of pondering on whether to get a Carbon Fibre or steel bike I finally decided that what I really want to do some time is to at the very least get over to Europe and do some touuring and the latest CF bike would of hardly have been the bike to do that on would it.

Although having just watched T De France I was drawling over the machines they were all riding. But in the end I had to decide between getting either Paul Villiers or Chas Roberts to build me a made to measure bike.In the end I chose Chas because I only live up the road from where his premises are.

The model I have gone for is the Clubman with a compact frame mainly because it is easier for Chas to get an exact fit for me.Because I am such a bad cyclist Chas is fitting it with XT equipment.I really need all the assistance I can get when it comes to climbing hills.

I expect to collect it in mid August and once I do I will post a photo of it.

At 59 I am like a 5 year old waiting for Christmas I just cannot wait to get it.
