The first posting in this thread put a small lump in my throat lol. I had to go outside and immediately hug my disco and lock its doors just to hear that wonderful sound lol awesome thread!

Just reread this thread. I certainly miss my 1996 D1. As "Lt Fuzz" mentioned, I can still remember the sound of the doors opening. I have owned 7 Land Rovers since 2002, unfortunately only 1 D1 (1996 SD) that I sold when I thought I was going to have to put a new engine in it (sold it to a guy in MO for $1800 w/147k miles I believe; he drove it as is for another 60k i think). I still remember all the little quirks my 96 had. Part of the pleasure of owning it was the constant tinkering she "needed." I had the basic SD version, so no frills. Just the bare bones minimum naugahide seats, no sun roofs, no rear A/C, nothing. I miss the seating position, the weather band radio (which doesnt come on the LR3/4s for some reason), the easy to work on mechanics, and the stock off road performance.

I bought mine as a more affordable alternative to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. My ex-wife and I had just moved out to Laughlin, NV and we liked hiking a lot. One of the guys I worked with said I needed a 4wd to get to the good hiking trails. I was driving my ex's 99 Explorer Sport 2wd. Her brother had a Grand Cherokee and used it off road on canoe trips. So we decided to get one, except used ones were crazy expensive (in my opinion). I remembered a girl I went to grad school with, mentioning getting Discovery. I remembered the Wall Street Journal ads too. I always thought LRs were unreliable POS, but for kicks I searched for used discos and found my 96 at LR Las Vegas. Traded the 99 Exploder in and I have driven Land Rovers ever since (with the exception of a 99 MB E320 that I owned concurrently with LRs from 2008-2010, which I still miss, and a brief desire to own a diesel pickup - 06F350 KR for 6 months).

I have missed all of them, but I miss my first one, the 1996 Discovery the most.
