Why the JK 3.8L V6 sucks.....the video!!

I did better on the hills than a LJ, auto, 33's and 4.88 gears. While I was faster on the highway we both sucked and were the slowest things on the road.

My unlimited Jk has 35's, manual tranny and 35's. Both jeeps were had similar mods.

This dead horse has been flogged more than your poor JK. Purchase a different vehicle or get used to enjoying the scenery.

Coming from my FJ60 the JK is a rocketship.:victory:

Whooptido for you:coffeedrink: If we only ever covered a topic once then forums would shut down. Also, show me where the video of the climb from Silverthorn to the tunnel has been beaten to death already?

I don't think the 3.8 is that great either, but I think the weakest link is the jeeps auto transmission, a five or 6 speed auto in there would probably make the 3.8 fine.

LOL...ya'll are a hoot! I'd be going 35mph with my flashers on in the 70 series! 60mph is moving quite nicely.

I guess it's what you're used to. I felt that the 3.8L motor did just fine with the Earthroamer XV-JP conversion. It's no Corvette, but I never felt lacking for power. Of course, I just cruised at about 65mph anyways for fuel consumption purposes.

Honestly, there are not many rigs, modern or otherwise, that you can add several hundred pounds of armor, larger tires, etc. to and expect to be able to keep the cruise control on at 80mph....

I have no issues with the 3.8. I have owned a half-dozen 4.0L powered trucks and three JKs. It is a standard engine choice. No big deal.

I have also tested 5.7 JKs flat out on wide desert roads and it is a thing of beauty. Just like anything with that level of performance, you must pay to play.:smiley_drive:

Hey Cole, when you're ready to do the Hemi, give me a call! The issue is being able to do things like that hill easily, not that it's can't do it at all. That thing was giving it all she had so I'm with you. :)

I went from an 86 Isuzu trooper with 4.56 gears, 31" tires and a woppin' 100hp..If I ever saw 5th gear it was a miracle. My rubicon JK is a HP deamon compared to that thing. Granted it's not a drag racer...but that's not what I bought it for..with me I think it's adequate with the 4.10's and the 32's.

Why does everyone automatically assume we all want race cars? I want "enough" power to pull the speed limit without banging the rev limiter, with a moderately built rig and gear. That is all.

The Grand Cherokee and Commander come wtih enough motor to do this. My "complaint" is that was not an option in the heavier JK Unlimited.

The V6 is better than the 4.0L in the same situation, but it is still not enough.

I think a big consideration for this topic is the terrain covered. If you're doing any camping or 4wheeling here in Colorado, you're likely going to cross at 12k+ ft mountain pass @ a 6% grade. This is where the problem is. If we lived in KS, it would probably be fine.

Even some of the hills around town, IE: Lakewood/Golden area, can be a problem if you don't have sufficient momentum going into them.

I smell what you're cooking and I agree.
But I also knew full well what I was getting when I bought it.

My real Santa list had a turbo diesel on it though. :smiley_drive:

I only paid $1750 delivered for a Hemi, trans, and t-case with 30k on it 2 years ago (CAN bus as well). The new crate ones were $$, but I wonder how the used market currently is.

Do you think the engine is having elevation issues as well? I'd wonder if something like a turbo would help in this situation.

I LOVE turbo cars. Have owned and heavily modified 4. Currently have a Porsche 951(944 turbo).

I think a turbo would be ideal for the elevation. Tricky stuff on a "V" platform without doing twins. For simplicity sake I think the Hemi or supercharger would be better.

Although, I did a little research into the "remote" mount turbos. The big problem is that the air intake ends up under the Jeep.
