Regarding the hawk ID, I'd say it's a Cooper's Hawk. The Sharp Shinned Hawk has similar coloration, and the two species overlap in size, making ID difficult. The Cooper's has a larger head and neck, and larger feet than the Sharp-Shinned. The Cooper's is more lkely to be found in a suburban setting. So I think the bird in the photo is a Cooper's Hawk.
Both Cooper's and Sharp-Shinned Hawks primarily prey on other birds. They hunt from a perch, or by cruising through the treetops and surprising the unwary. Both hawks have extra-long tails, which help them maneuver through the tree branches in pursuit of prey. A backyard bird feeder is like a grocery store for these hawks.
