Will bigger tires help me go faster?

If you don't know there are several methods of finding the axle gear ratio. I would recommend that so you can find the correct tire size for your application. I would pull the differential cover and inspect the gears and gear oil. If you do not know the history of the truck, water crossings or lack of maintenance may be an issue and you can prevent expensive repairs. The ratio is usually on the ring gear or you can do a tooth count. Another method is to count tire rotation to drive line rotation... How many times drive line spins to tire rotation. You can easily find specifics online on the subject.

You're probably going faster now because the old wheels aren't stock, putting you 10 mph off. I can't imagine that those wheels and tires with stock gears will keep you at 55 mph, if that truck was ever a corporate vehicle you might see if it has a governor. Others have answered as to larger diameter tires/wheels will cover more ground with each revolution of the wheel, your spedo will be more off than it is now.

The speedo isoff because the previous owner and I put on 12 bolt axles, with a gear ratio of 4:10 on her.

You mean, 14 bolt rear axle and Dana 44 front. The rear is the best you can get, stock, the front isn't bad as long as you put a truss to keep it from flexing

and yes, it's just as cheap and easy as welding a 5/8" rod from spindle to housing to spindle.

Absolutly, I had a 87 SIlverado with a TH400 and 373 gears. With 33's I got 10MPG with 35's I got 13 MPG. I also pulled the same RPM at 80 with 35's as I did at 65 with 33's.

I learned pretty much everything the hard way. I learned how to tell the difference between a dana 44 and a dana 60 front axle after I sold the dana 60 for dana 44 money.... trust me when I say this, D'OH!

I like my 37s with 4.56 gears.....awfully noisy though. Oh, with the 6.2 diesel I get a consistent 18.0 mpg commuting to work.

Dana 60 front, 14 bolt w/locker rear.

Haha, I could totally see myself doing that. I guess that is when we learn the best!

Getting the 33s on tomorrow I can not wait to see how much of a difference they make!
