Winch or alternative options

Winch or alternative options? Hahaha. Those alternative options are something you should already have a supply of long before youre hardcore enough for a winch. Winches are self explanatory, but often there is nothing to winch to. And burying a tire as a winch point....ain't going to happen in summertime heat.
-Maxtracks
-4x4 lumber
-extra bottle jack
-Highlift with tire grabber
-Shovel, and another shovel
-something to chop a tree down with
-cargo ratchet straps, the types semis use. Excellent improvised tree straps, tow straps etc. etc.
-30' of chain and hooks and binders
-tire chains
If you have all that and still need a winch, then get a winch. But a winch DEOS NOT replace a shovel, unless you like getting most your truck unstuck, and leaving your axles behind.

a winch is an excellent replacement for a shovel. i cant relate how many times ive pushed a button and never broke a sweat.

And a shovel does not always replace a winch. You need the right tool for the job. Vice grips will work on a nut but a socket or combination wrench is more appropriate.
This past winter I was on an icy off camber section of trail and about a foot from a tree on the down hill side. Got somewhat sideways. A shovel would have done me NO good what so ever. The easiest and safest thing was to pull cable and pull the truck up to a more level area. There have been numerous times that I've been burried and haven't wanted any part of spending hours digging. Especially in the type of mud that just fills back in as quickly as you can dig.

As for comments like "I've never needed a winch" blah blah blah, well you're my hero......That doesn't mean it's not the right tool for someone else. Everyone needs to determine that based on their own desires and experiences.

It really is hard to beat the ease and convenience of a winch. If you're looking into budget winches, make sure you take a look at Warn's VR series. The VR8000 and VR10000 can both be had for less than $600, and I've seen them in the $400s before.

Other than that, bust out the come-along! :REExeSquatsHL1:

Zimm - already signed up for vermont months ago and attended last year. It's a great time if you haven't been there yet. Maybe I just need to get smaller tires and stop using lockers to see if I really will get stuck. 😄 Hum...

i'll see you there, and i'll be happy to demonstrate the proper method of sticking a truck deep in the mud. at which point, ill ask you if you would rather use a winch, or a shovel.. :)

When I had a jeep I used a winch a few times to pull my self up. I avoid mud but at some point on the trails and parks I ride you meet rocks big enough you can't climb and your ego doesn't back you down until your half up a trail with no backing down... lol. But when I needed that winch, a jack, sand track, shovel, anything else would not have worked.
