Winch solenoid relocation - let's see yours

For those of you with the Warn winches, are they still using the four-pack of solenoids for their winches?
If so, when you relocate your solenoid pack you may want to consider going with one of these instead.

One will replace the four pack and they are MUCH less prone to failing. They are also sealed units and much smaller than the Warn boxes.
I did this on my 98 Discovery. Replaced the four-pack with the above solenoid and moved it into the engine bay. Removed the remote plug socket and and installed it on the grille of my truck.

I like this set up a LOT, very clean, neat and functional. Any reason why this set up wouldn't work with a Smittybilt winch?

I don't see why not. The solenoid is also commonly known as an Albright solenoid.

That Warn solenoid pack looks identical to the one I replced in mine. Typical Warn four-pack. The linked solenoid is a replacement for superwinch winches and is the one I used. Its the same thing as the Albright Solenoid found here:

Only its $23 less at summit racing.
Wiring is fairly simple, and I dislike DC wiring. If I remember correctly, my remote went from using 5 wires to 3, as well.

thanks for those links, i was just curseing my huge box yesterday trying to figure out where to put it. the older warn solenoids can run on a 3 wire remote also, much easier for in cab, just have to run two.

Can you explain how I would wire the WARN controller receptacle when there are only the 3 prongs on the Albright? So that I can use the WARN wired remote as well as the wireless remote: http://www.warn.com/truck/accessories/wireless_control.shtml? Any idea where to find the WARN female receptacle as found on the WARN solenoid? I do not want to remove mine from this new solenoid as I would rather keep it complete to sell.

No, you can can use the 5 pin socket. Two of the pins just won't be used.
2 of the 5 wires are earth/ground feeds. You could probably keep them and ground them to something, but I didn't and its not really needed since the Albright/Superwinch solenoid is grounded.
Here's what I found in my notes:

Green - winch in - to yellow on solenoid
Black - winch out - to blue on solenoid
White - power - to battery or aux fuse box

Brown - earth lead - not used
Red - earth lead - not used

Black(on solenoid) - ground

That little WARN socket is $45 online. There must be a generic PIN connector that is cheaper...

Yeah that socket isn't cheap. Theoretically you could use any connector, a four flat trailering connector would work, for example. The positive is that no one could hook up to and unspool your winch in a parking lot, etc. The negative is that if your remote breaks, no one could hook up to and operate your winch.

Mine's not very pretty, but it works. I'm using a Warn wireless remote system, but also added a second plug that's mounted by the front bumper on the drivers side so somebody can operate the hand-held factory remote from outside the vehicle.

The solenoid pack is between my primary battery and the fender. The red dial is a disconnect switch for the winch power feed.
