Wind resistant wide brim hats

I'm looking for a full brim hat that won't blow up in the wind and has a string for when it blows off. In the past I've seen mountaineering hats with a stiff brim that won't blow up and let your face sunburn but can't find them. I'm using an old Filson hat now but it's beat up heavy oiled canvas and was wanting somthing a little better in the heat. The old Filson holds shape in 35mph wind but the rest I've tried all blow up exposing my face. Mountains have high wind and high UV. Near the water has high wind as well so the brims blow up as soon as the wind gets heavy. Suggestions?

I have worn a well fitting akubra riverina, 102mm brim so fantastic for shade, for a bunch of years. It's a great hat. Over about 25mph of wind I need to keep a hand on the brim but that's pretty rare in my ranges and unusual for that much wind and risk of sunburn!

I've got the same Filson, probably the hottest hat I own.

What size brim?

As Nathane says, Akubra is good, I have a Akubra lightning ridge and an Akubra kiandra. Both excellent hats, but felt is kinda warm in the summer for me. I am a straw hat guy in the summer. I have a Torcido weave straw out of Optimo Hats in Bisbee AZ that is probably the coolest and most comfortable hat I have ever owned. It does not like rain though. Any good hat shop can add strings pretty easily.

Honestly, just a decent straw Stetson with strings and you are set, if you want year round a fur felt Stetson will work fine, damn site cooler than the Filson. If you are afraid someone will mistake you for a cowboy, just have them change the crease around.

My wife has picked up a couple of these at Costco. I like them a lot, wear them backpacking and hiking. They are well ventilated but still offer quite a lot of sun protection. They are one size with a cord to adjust tighter but I guess I'm lucky in that they fit me perfectly without tightening.

I like the Panama Jack hats coolest hat and only hat I can stand to wear in the heat. But they fold up in 8mph breeze. I gave up and just deal with it. All the heavier hats are too damn hot.

I wear this straw when I'm working outside. Keeps my ears & neck from getting sunburned actually has loops for the stampede string. It has a nice sweatband & fits well; it's never blown off my head. It's my summer working "go-to" hat.

X1 on the Costco hat. Maybe not perfect in the wind but hard to beat for the price.

I also vote for Tilley. The "x" strap that goes around the back of your head as well as under the chin will keep the hat in place in very high winds. Tilley sells summer weight models as well as the traditional heavy cotton. I have the latter, it's 20 years old now. I've worn it in rainforest and desert heat. Good stuff.

You can fond more selection on Amazon. But I wear one when doing yard work right now, but I used to wear these when I was in the Navy. I know they aren't as nice as some of these others, but with the risk of losing it or it getting destroyed, I'd rather be out the $15-$20 and not $60+, but that's just me.

I enjoy the Costco hat pictured above but for years in Baja used a Mexican made,wide-brimmed sombrero that you see all over down there. Howling winds were no match for those sombreros. Our swapmeet here has some but like everything these days,doesn't look as hearty
I also tried the Panama Jack version but too flimsy.

Try the Costco hat. If you don't like it, or that type of hat, you're only out <$20. If it works for you then consider a Tilley.
