So I got my call sign today. KE7ODU. My wife is trying to convince me that whenever I transmit, I have to say it with a southern accent (she is from Georgia, so she's allowed to say stuff like that). But I don't remember reading that anywhere in the FCC regulations. Can anyone confirm??

Southerners don't use callsigns- they use handles.

Just watch the Dukes of Hazard or Smokey and the Bandit if you need some suggestions!

You are required to give your callsign at the end of every transmission. That is, at the end of each consversation, not each time you stop to let someone else in the group TX. You are also required to stop every 10 minutes for station ID and let others on the freq have air time if the conversation takes more than 10 minutes. It is rare though that you have to give a station break for someone else.

You are required to id every 10 minutes and at the end of each of a communications and thats all. Most ham end up Id'ing way more than they legal are required to.

YOU don't need to stop and let anyone else in except for emergency or priority messages. Its common courtesy to let people into your conversation or to start there own,, but not legally required. Two people can talk all day on a frequency and as long as they ID every 10 minutes and when they are done and they are legal. It is required you leave some space between transmissions to give someone time to jump in, but the only people you have to let use the frequency is people with emergency and priority messages/traffic. Note if your using a repeater, repeater/club rules may also apply, such as dont tie up the repeater with long winded communications during busy drive time, but those are not FCC rules.

Since I'm a single band operator, I'm only familiar with the 2M repeaters in the area. Here's some info on what I use regularly.

The ARA http://www.w7ara.org/Web/ maintains two repeaters on top of Elden. I can generally hit either from anywhere in the Prescott area.

I'll list the frequency, offset (+ or -), the PL tone, repeater ID, and location.

146.980 - 162.2 W7ARA Mt Elden, Flagstaff – Open Auto patch for 928 area code (Flagstaff area only). Autopatch sequence: Key up, announce your call sign, then, without unkeying, press the * key followed by the 3-digit area code + 7-digit number. Keep the radio keyed for about half a second after entering the last digit, then, unkey. The repeater will announce "autopatch" and place the call. When finished, key up, announce your call sign, press the # key, then unkey. The repeater will respond with "call complete" and the time. There is a 3 minute limit per call.

147.140 + 162.2 W7ARA Mt Elden, Flagstaff Linked to Mt. Ord (147.360 + 162.2 W7MDY, Mt Ord, Sunflower ). With the link, I can reach most of East Phx, Mesa, Scottsdale area.

Another good repeater owned by the Verde Valley Amateur Radio Association
(http://www.vvara.org/repeater.html)
147.220 + 162.2 W7EI, Mingus Mt.
It's an open repeater. It covers Verde Valley, Sedona, Prescott, Ash Fork, Flagstaff, and west Phoenix. (with exceptions along I-17 south of Sunset Point)

146.7800 - 91.5 WB6JAA IRLP Node #3735, Bill Williams Mt. It also offers excellent area coverage. This is also a good IRLP node - it's up 99% of the time.

To use it, listen for any traffic. If no traffic is heard, Key up and ask if there is any outstanding traffic, and say you'd like to access the node. After a pause for traffic, announce your call sign and say:

"This is {your call sign here} controlling" and while still transmitting type in the node # you are trying to reach (like #1268 in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory) Release the transmit key and listen for the node to come on line. Once the node is active, make your contact call and see if anyone answers.

Once your done with your conversation, announce "Closing Node", and while still transmitting type in "73". Release the transmit key and listen for the node to close.

147.000 + 162.2 KB7CN Mingus Mt. - nuther good one w/ wide coverage

State wide repeater info http://www.azfreqcoord.org/2m/2m.pdf (all bands shown on home page)

IRLP node info http://status.irlp.net/

This should keep ya busy for a while!

And, I'll give ya a shout on 146.980!
