Work Gloves for Repair and Recovery

Wrenching, I never wear gloves. Just carry a bottle of gojo and use the shop towels. I will wear heavy gloves when working with tires just because they aren't oily (or shouldn't be!) and are nasty. If I had a shop-shop to work in, I'd probably guy disposable latex gloves. That is what I used back when I was at the rover shop. Really nice to be able to be wrist deep in a transmission or whatever and be able to snap the gloves off, toss em and have clean hands.

Winching, I wear heavy gloves and keep my hands away from the winch.

My last pair of mechanics gloves have become my winter photography gloves now. Can feel everything on the camera yet give my hands some protection and a touch of warmth.

For recovery work I use these: http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum8497.php

A little pricey but they protect your hands better than anything else I have used. I sliced right through a pair of mechanix heavy duty gloves on a buggered rally car during a race and switched to these as soon as I saw them. They have great wear properties so far (5-6 yrs so far) and I have climbed over all manners of wrecked rally cars with them.

but I do keep a couple pair of mechanix gloves around for the easy stuff. The Ringers gloves take a while to break in though.

Here's some more U.S. made gloves to consider: Geier Gloves

For anyone checking out their website and wondering about warmth/durability, here's an email response that addresses such:
"Thank you for your inquiry. Our warmest glove is the merino wool lined glove -- style #204ES LDW medium weight deerskin lined with a merino wool liner. The second warmest would be our pile lined glove -- style #440LDP medium weight elkskin lined with a pile lining. Both are a good work glove. The 440LDP is made with a little heavier leather, however the 204ES LDW is warmer."

I bought a pair of Heritage Winter Work Gloves about a month ago. So far, so good.

Wow you definitely did bring it back to life. Since posting this I have tried all sorts of gloves.

The Petzl Cordex gloves have been my favorite and longest lasting so far.

They have leather palms with a synthetic backing which provides all the benefits from the article that Scott posted up. They are a little on the higher priced side but have definitely outlasted the others I've tried.

My second favorite are actually one of the cheapest. They are Atlas Fit gloves, which I purchased from my local hardware store. I have used them for yard work, rope handling, recovery work and a ton of other things. The one thing that stinks is they make your hands stink.

I have used the Ringers Rescue Gloves and they are tough but take a long time to break in. I purchased mine in October of 2012 and they are still like new.

Another set I tried were Custom Leathercraft Handymans. They are similar to Mechanix Original gloves but the seam for the fingers are right on the end which takes some of the dexterity away unfortunately.

These have been the best of the ones I've tried since. Hopefully this opens up some options for folks.

I'm definitely going to try the Viking Gloves!

I too was in the market for gloves a few years ago. I had tried a number of $20 HD gloves w/out much luck. In many cases they wore out too soon.

Then one day I saw a 3 pack of leather gloves at Costco of all places. Knowing Costco's generous return policy, I decided to buy a pack. IIRC they were just $20-30 for all 3.

Out of the packaging, the leather was thick, strong/tough, quite stiff, and unlined. It took some time to wear them in but during that process they weren't uncomfortable to wear, just a little stiff.

Currently I still have all 3 pairs purchased. One is still unused and unworn waiting for its chance. The 2 pictured below are kept in my rig 24x7x365. The one more worn is the one I use the most. Def. not too bad considering their cost.
