The willys now is pretty good variant. Who ever thought of the "dragon" variant, should be shot with a bucket of dragon feces. Sport is the best one to get for real world useage. Rubicon is great, but e discos and lockers are NOT REALLY needed. For the extra money you can do better in the aftermarket.

Not really. Lockers are more dependent on where you go and what you do. e-disco certainly isn't needed... but I'll be honest... I like not having to get out to engage it. As for the extra money, sure if you do the labor yourself you could likely do alright... but swapping out the front axle, new Tcase and lockers likely run you pretty close to what the difference in the Rubi/Sport were - especially after paying shop time.

As for those savings... most of us finance a vehicle. That means there's not much savings happening, and what was saved... would take some time before it could cover the cost of lockers, etc.

False...Rubicon stickers for $34,995 and my X or Sport stickers for $26,195. That's a $5800 difference. I've wheeled everywhere I wanted to go on my D30 and used that extra money for other upgrades that I wanted...not what Chrysler puts on. Majority of those parts get replaced anyways.

So what you're saying is that you don't need the extras that come with the Rubicon. That's good for you.

For my needs, I'm very certain I must have a D44 up front, lockers, and the low-range xfer case. The e-locker is nice to have, though personally I'd option if off if I could.

I do want to make a lot of mods to a stock Rubicon, though none of the "Rubicon-special" items would be changed out.

As Septu has said, if you did the work yourself, and maybe even got some used parts (Rubicon take-offs with very low miles) you might be able to do those mods for less than the $5800 Rubicon premium. I'm not personally capable/confident of swapping a front axle, so shop time would make the price not attractive.

Add in (as Septu also said) that I might like to finance my new vehicle, and factory warranty is a big factor, then for people that need those features, the Rubicon is very much worth it. Resale on a "genuine" Rubicon is always going to stay higher than a "home-made Rubicon" too.

So for you it does what you need it to. But that doesn't change anything I said. I'm not even suggesting most people get a Rubi... as most don't come close to using it as needed. Heck, even for 90% of my wheeling I don't use it to it's max. But that still doesn't change the fact that for the cost of upgrading a sport, that unless you're doing it yourself, it's almost a certainty that you cannot put a new(er) Tcase, lockers, gears and new front D44 in for $5800.

I'm not really looking to get into the Rubi/Sport debate. I was simply pointing out that using a blanket statement saying "lockers are really not needed and that for the extra money you could do better in the aftermarket" isn't really true.

Always cracks me up that everyone always wants diesel... Is it because we can't get it or what? Sure mileage is better but I'm sure the price jump will be enough that most won't opt for the $3500 plus sticker price bump.

I hope what ever Jeep decides they do it right, however I can't believe that will be the case.

My guess is it will be an aluminum uni bodied, IFS, IRS, hybrid diesel electric city car with zero ability to be modified and a heads up display that you can load trail footage into so when you are on paved roads it will appear that you are driving off road! ;)

Low end torque and mileage bump.
If it were available when I bought I absolutely would have optioned for the diesel at $3500 extra.

Demand for the new Deisel GC was much higher than expected, and the Diesel RAM 1500 sold out very, very fast, so I think your gut feel that there would not be many takers has been proven wrong.

When MB owned their share they did a market analysis of a diesel option at $1700 and didn't find it market viable...

I don't know if I'd pony up 3.5K. I want the torque, want to be able to tow better, want the range. But I want what I want ---- if I'm gunna pay that nut to Mutha Fiat, I also want my bare bones interior, manual trans, etc. I really live out of my vehicles for weeks at a time. It would be nice to have something that works right out of the box.

Off the top of my head:
bedlined interior
conduit or some sort of raceway for the wiring
huge or dual battery
rear seat delete with storage option --- dog option. a brand that purports to be outdoorsy should put-up or shut-up
cb option. c'mon alreay. it was discussed in 1978 and we still install them. put it somewhere logical and out of the way
driving light kits with easy switches to install

It would piss off the aftermarket but, so many things could be incorporated that most Jeepers want and stupid she-eye-tea could be eliminated...

In all reality, a factory hemi JK would get better mileage, HP, torque and they already have everything in house. I would put down for that, but not 20g like its going to cost me now to do it.

Ditto. All rubicon related performance features, delete ridiculous electronic "do for me's" what I can easily do myself, Spartan interior. More beef, less parsley trimmings to make the plate look good, so to speak. Diesel? I dunno, would have to make a direct comparison on costs (purchase and operating) at the time it becomes available and priced.
