We got tired of the normal summer heat and both wife and I put in for some vacation time.
The big truck has been ok for a couple 1 night stays but we wanted to see (what else we need for longer trips)
We wanted to see some of the mountain ranges closer to Yellowstone ecosystem and see what places we might go to in next couple years.
!st we did fine, stayed married after 6 days and no major mishaps.?
Day 1 we traveled from our home base Sheridan,Wy over the Bighorns via route 16 from Buffalo to Tensleep.
Both 14, and route 16 are fantastic scenic routes over the Bighorns. note 14a is quite steep and both full routes have runaway truck ramps and have recorded fatalities. We live here and are used to the roads but they are steep and eat brakes often.Traveled this time from Buffalo to Tensleep through Worland and cut across to Meeteetse Wy.
Took a few photos in the morning and stopped at Gooseberry Badlands on the cut across from Worland to Meeteetse .
Hwy 16 to Hwy 20 to Hwy 431,
Meeteetse was having the annual Labor day weekend Rodeo, Parade and extravaganza. So the little town was hopping . Tried to get a burger but they sold out while we were in line so we made a quick chicken soft taco in truck and away went down the wood river to ghost town of Kirwin.
The river got up this spring and also a few slides had hindered people early in the year but all that was cleared.
River was down and forging water crossings was easy. Road is tight we are just under 24ft so we watch, 10ft tall and good ground clearance. drug spare a little at main river crossing. Note: in spring and spring is June here ..you need 35's and 3 inch lift on this road. You will travel well over 1/4 mile in water. You have been warned. Meeteetse museums in summer give guided tours and there is alot of history. On the way in is perfect Bighorn sheep country and the outfitters were busy several trucks and trailers just across main river crossing then it gets to tight for trailers. Some waits for utv groups to clear as road is one lane in a lot of places. It is also prime , i mean prime Grizz country. You must carry bear spray and follow and think about that. Man was mauled this summer above Kirwin.
This is the area in late summer the bears dig for moths in the shale on the steep cliffs. We went exploring in some of the buildings, semi leveled the truck and spent the night at 9200ft. No one else was anywhere around.
Sometime in Morning wife got a chill and i fired up diesel heater and we cooked breakfast took some pictures and worked our way back down from high country. It was dry and about 3/4 way down truck wanted a regen so we stopped and stretched legs. There is an outcropping on one of the feeder roads called the wall, I wanted to see it so we turned and found about 400 Buffalo or Bison in a nice valley and so we took a photo.
We were dragging behind a little so filled up in Meeteetse and boogied down to Thermopolis and grabbed lunch.
I wanted to stop at a petroglphs site on the way but time was short. There is a back way instead of main hwy 120 then 20 in Thermopolis that cuts across reservation but road goes to primitive and i want to run it first in a utv or offroad small rig. We got stuck in May and had to sit in middle of blm road so wife is out on being stuck.
We got out of Thermopolis and ran windriver canyon (fantastic views) over to Riverton and then to Dubois. Hwy 20 to hwy 26. It was hot and wind was blowing truck started running a little warmer so we stopped once and cooled off, picked up a new two burner stove in Riverton because the old one had leaked some at breakfast after past 20 years of use, i guess we can buy a new one.
We really wanted to get to Dubois and go to Double Cabin but time was running low. Looked at some town campgrounds in Dubois were all full of people- Not our style in summer, Dubois is super nice they have a nice military museum and all kinds of shops, We have stayed in winter downtown and it is a lot of fun. No people with Nice overlooks of the badlands when it snows. It is beautiful in winter. Our alternate stay was up near whiskey mountain country at one of the lakes behind Torrey lake. We found a nice spot leveled the truck and crashed right at dark. Diesel heater was problematic in morning, cooked breakfast , hopped on electric bike for a potty run and took pictures, There are alot of petroglyphs in the area some on private land but some on national Forrest and blm . Worked up to trailhead to Louise lake definitely coming back here with canoe. Note: All the bighorns in this area got sick a few years ago and now they are coming back but it's going to be awhile. Selenium deficiency: you can google that or read book called The light in the High Places. Beautiful country.
Caught a osprey on Nest and a working coyote in a field leaving and cool rocks, alot of moss agate and fools gold if you look. This is day three and I am going to post a few photos and pick up here in a few lines because next section is a handful.

3rd day caught the coyote and osprey leaving Whiskey mountain country filled with water in Dubois then kicked up hwy 287 to and over union pass road. we would go roughly 77 miles of gravel / improved road it was steep and switchbacks in places but usually just washboard and rough. Ran into a Bicycle guy, Bruce, old like me..offered water and got a conversation he was going canada to mexico we would see him next day and would swap stories again. We were heading to Green river lakes. Union pass off shoot roads is interesting enough with all the Mountain ranges we can see. It is Continental divide country as well as Columbia river divides also here. Some of the ranches boast here that they are the most remote in the lower 48. Road was good but rough till we got close to the turn back to Green river lakes here near bacon ridge the road turns red and if it rained you'll need a helicopter because it is slimy clay and fairly steep. Dry it is no issue. Logging truck nearby was 10 wheel drive ex military. Green river country looks like it fell out of a novel about mountain men and earning your meals from the land. Road is very rough but wide and a few hot springs on the way Aspens turning colors. We found campground near dark but we saw a pull out back a .5 mile back and went there and saved our $15 a night. Hunting season in Wyoming is a all fall event with different animals and regulations going so hunters were pre scouting for rifle, some were bow hunting and some were just moving camps in for when it snows. Not crowded but we saw quite a few campers along the river to where you can go no further at green river lakes campground. This is Flat top mountain of the Wind river range of mountains, exceptionally beautiful and large amounts of birds migrate through. Here we saw swans, ducks and cranes. Oh its fantastic fishing if you can take the time!
Wind rivers they say match Yosemite they say.. minus the big falls, but a little research and a few 3-5 mile hikes you can see some water. We will do that next visit. And bring canoe.

Day 4, Heater next morning was a non helpful guest.
Ate breakfast took photos and beat it out to Pinedale.
About 20 miles same rough road and then they have a fantastic paved hwy..we were excited I had the duals down to 65 psi and they were better but our butts were happy. Stopped and talked with Bruce , great guy. Got some fuel and headed to granite hot springs in the Hobacks. Pinedale area is key point to a lot of sections of beautiful lake country in the wind rivers. Many trails and campgrounds secret caves sites and events are here., petroglyphs etc. Also museum of the mountain man, there are people here who still live that lifestyle! Lots of activity in the small town and traditional souvenir type shopping also. Grocery store is the hardware store and is also sporting goods store. More traffic and as we are heading toward Jackson area you can feel it driving.
We had been to Granite hot springs before but it was by dog sled. Now if you ever get the chance to go to Jackson in the winter go on the dogsled trip to the hotsprings..do it..
wind had gotten up so we helped some folks move a tree out of the road, went to the falls below the springs and this moose was hanging out. about that time wife said " there is a naked man swimming in the falls..i focused on the moose to see if he would escort the the bather away but moose was cordial and didn't let it happen... go to the hot springs..in the winter..canyon and river is beautiful. But closer to Jackson the more hippier things are...sorry no offense.

5th day made nice steak breakfast, Went for a soak at the hot springs and traveled short mileage and was in Jackson traffic, People piled up downtown and this is where the rich and famous congregate often . We go in winter sometimes because its crowded in summer. Its neat place but we felt like we saw more people there then... than we did all last year. Got a few photos of the Tetons, It was a little smokey went up into Yellowstone and got a campground site with our senior pass did not have to pay entrance and did not have to pay much for site. Showers were not much Wife said. But we got some ice cream at gift shop.
This is Jackson to Yellowstone country, beautiful, Jenny lake, Jackson lake many really neat places but you have to plan way ahead and plan your visit accordingly, rafting, climbing, trail rides all kinds of activities.

That night in Yellowstone it went to about 23 and i had to use the backup lp heater.
They have rules for everything here. fairly crowded. We go to Yellowstone 2-3 times a year so did not get up early enough to be in right places for animals we usually watch. Always nice to drive through park and east entrance is always beautiful. Came through Cody and Greybull back up over to Shell and shell canyon and Bighorns and home. We have lots of local hides in the Bighorns and cool sites but those are for another day.
Joked with wife.
"Where do chipmunks live"
She said: "rocks, trees, holes, mountains "etc...I said "nope"
"They are munks..they live in a monastery...?⚡"

safe travels.

Double Cabin and Green River lakes are favorites. We just got back from an Idaho trip with nights at Grassy Lake and waking to snow on us at Togwotee pass

Is the the road through Grassy lake passable with a truck camper rig?

Great trip! Love that country. Thermopolis has some really great public hot spring soaking. The state/res owned one is free and limited to 20 minute soak but it's amazingly. I've spent 35 years exploring the Wind Rivers and I've seen maybe 10% of it. Finest range in the lower 48 IMHO. If you get a longer stay in Trail Lakes/Torrey Creek, a weekend walk up to Ross Lake is well worth it. Bring your packraft and enjoy a time warp to Alaska/Yukon with fishing to match.

I thought that looked like an old Deuce-and-a-Half or M813 military truck in the buffalo photo. Later you said it was hauling logs, I thought it was hauling water from the photo, but then with all the lakes on Union Pass, you don't need to haul water.
