xterra as an expedition vehicle?

great vehicle. but you should be asking this in the Nissan forum. not American full size. there will be a far better wealth of knowledge and passion for nissan over there!

oh, I already have, I just wanted to see what other comparable vehicles existed!

I love LR, but they're all automatics. I really want manual.

from what I read, some are only getting 20-25mpg, that does not seem worth the 'hassle' ... better of waiting if the 2014 models have a diesel.

:sombrero:My last Xterra was a 2006 OR and she was capable of some really tough treks, even while towing an off-road trailer, but

Not knowing what changes were made subsequent to 2006, my disapointment in the '06 was the aluminum front diff and the alternator location on the bottom of the engine-

Great 4lo/4hi and elock rear diff

Good mileage and plenty of power-

I had an 04 X that I loved & was fine for light wheeling but I tow a trailer loaded with 3 4 wheelers & assorted camping gear & the X would pull it but not happily & the gas mileage was never that great 10-11 towing & the best I saw on the highway was 16. that was not much better than the full sized Bronco I came from. So I traded it off recently for a "new to me" 06 F250 XL...worlds of difference..pics to follow soon. The X was nice but the 1st gen 00-04's are underpowered the 05's & up have a much better 4.0 engine. There are some guys on here in the Nissan section that can tell you all about them.

I think I may have posted in the Nissan forum too but... I had an '06 OR MT and now have a '12 P4X (same as OR). If you have specific questions or need more info. Perhaps most of the folks on thenewx.org are biased but lots of good info there.

I was referring more to the 2005+

The 04 is inherently underwhelming in the engine power range.

How was the upgrade to the p4x? Any noticeable changes? I found a decent 06 OR with 77k, manual for 11k I am thinking of flying out and getting.

I already own an 06 xterra, but the base model that the wife drives.

Did they ever change out the aluminum front diff, and alt placement? If so what year?

Nope the 2005-2012 still have a weak front diff.. The only real issue with that diff has been too much wheel spin from the skinny pedal.
The 4.0 is a great motor.. 261hps.. Rumor has it that the Gen 3 Xterra will have a diesel option.. I know Nissan is bringing this in the truck line and since the Xterra is
built on that line it only makes sense. The front diff is upgradable to the Titan diff and axles. This will give the front a little wider stance.. and some are using the 2005-2012 V8 pathy axels.
This is a Gen 2 Xterra with the Titan swap and Pathy Axels.
Check out Xterranation.org for more info..

They are making 3 models
X- Basic
S- more plush
ProX4 Rear locker and more aggressive Suspension

Yeah, I read the 2014 MIGHT have a xterra diesel, but I don't want to drop 30k~ for a truck right now, LOL ... unless it gets 30+mpg on the highway.

I am probably going to snag a 06-08 OR for 10-14k, and then wait a few years and grab a diesel.

Cool vid, was that guy an auto or manual, LOL

If we see a diesel Xterra in 2014, I may buy my first Nissan product! Any rumors on configuration? Inline 6? V6? Inline 4?
