Xterra Gas milage

Ok.. I just purchased an 2000 Xterra 4X4. I love it so far. Rugged, fun but, THE GAS MILEAGE SUCKS:exclaim:

Does anyone have ideas or tricks of increasing gas mileage (besides walking)? I average about 250 miles per tank!

Help!

I got the best mileage in mine when drafting semi's across the country, but that probably doesn't help. The only other thing I do to slightly improve mpg's is to drop 5-10 mph while on the highway (in So Cal that means driving 70-75 instead of 80-85), and due to lack of low end torque, I just let it slow down on hills instead of stepping into it. With this driving style, I average about 270-290 per tank. Not much of an increase, but with gas prices these days that translates into like $$ instead of $$$ at the pump.

Another thing is maybe try and change your perspective. Buy a SOA 60 series that gets 8 mpg and when you go back to the X, it will seem like a Prius!!!

Moody

Needs to get out more
This is not Moody; this is his brother-in-law using his computer. I am in the forum under KevX02. I am the proud owner of a 2002 Xterra, and I love it. I would be willing to bet if you do a lot of standard maintenance your mileage will improve. I don’t know about its history but simple things like changing your gas filter, running more aggressive oil and oil filter, new wires and plugs, K&N air filter, CAT Back exhaust (which is pricy I know) and changing you PCV valve will help a lot. I personally drive like a grandpa around town and that saves me a ton of gas as well. I run a 265x75x16 and I get away with 23 mpg town and around 25 mpg on the highway. It's a lot of work but it probably needs to be done anyway.

We use Amsoil products on both our vehicles. I average about 75mph on the freeways, but wouldn't say I drive like a grandma!

I have a lot of after market under armor, full body skid plate and sliders. I wonder if the excess weight would contribute to the low mileage?

We went off road a few months ago and while on the highway, there was a gradual hill near the lake..... yeah, I couldn't get that baby over 35mph if my life depended on it!

I would gladly take 290 mpg!

Probably can't get better gas mileage, if you want more range, throw an auxiliary tank on there.

Or swap it out for a diesel Nisson Patrol...;)

I think you would have to get a Mr. Fusion to get 290 mpg!

If you drive alot of miles everyday...get a cheap beater! Geo Metro, Civic, Jetta...etc. Why spend all that money on bumpers, rails, winches...etc. For it to sit in a parking lot while you're at work! This is my opinion...but it's what my wife and I do. My Silverado avg's 11mpg city, no way in hell i want to drive that all the time to work. My CJ is just as crappy! But both Jetta's get about 28 each! And nobody is eye balling any of my stuff!

1. Mr. Fusion powers the Flux Capacitor. You still need gas to power the car.

2. I feel your pain, and you know I love the FlyingFamily, but you were amply warned in the search thread that the older Xterras get bad gas mileage. I think there is a certain degree of variance in the Xterras. People claim anywhere between about 15-20 mpg equal driving on stock vehicles. For what its worth, the engine in the older X is a slight bore and stroke on the old Pathfinder engines, and those trucks exhibited the same kind of variability in mileage. What kind of mileage did Wil get on the trip from Fort Collins?

3. Are your mileage numbers GPS confirmed? If not, it may not be as bad as you think. Then again, it may be a lot worse. Even if the speedo is accurate, run a GPS for a tank and let it calculate the mileage. I have discovered that the speedo and odometer don't always match. On my sisters' Outback the speedometer and odometer are dead accurate. On my wife's Outback, the speedo is way off, but the odometer is accurate (didn't know that was possible). My point is that even if you matched the speedo against GPS, your mileage may still be off.

In my experience with the Pathfinder, synthetic fluids make a big difference in mileage. Confirm with the BN Guy, but you probably need to run GL-4 in the transmission, GL-5 would eat the bearings on a manual.

Can you run the Mr. Fusion without the Flux Capacitor?

Sorry, but it is a combo deal. :D

A question: Do you guys need two 4WD's? Some people do, I know we did back East because we lived in the boondocks.

Ah, geesh fellas. Let's just get to the source, ol' Doc Brown himself: "No, no, no. This sucker's electrical, but I need a nuclear reaction to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity I need."

We do NOT need 2 4WDs, but someone talked me into it saying I could save him if he were to ever get stuck.

I know I was warned about the gas mileage before I ever bought the X, but I was dead set on getting one and am a little stubborn.
We are looking into getting a beater that gets better mileage. Wil wants a motorcycle, but I am still worried about it.

Maybe I can go to the Airplane Graveyard in Tuscon and grab some wings. I could then weld them on the X and just strap and "Wide Load" sign on my back window..... Hummmmm, not a bad idea
