I will tell you one thing... If you install a RTT, the feeling we got was that if anything was unstable it was the RTT itself. We had the largest model like camping labs. When if folds open, it seats in it's own channel (the base that is) and at times it would bow and not seat correctly. We have safely (while vehicle parked of course) supported <400Lbs (2 adults, 2 kids, 1 dog, gear) in addition to the RTT's weight on our 2003 xterra stock roof rack. Ours never cracked at any part, or bent. But we didn't have ours mounted for more than 6 months with very limited use.
My .02... like said others said earlier would be to replace the stock rack and install something of all metal. Better safe than sorry. Plastic bases with that kind of weight is unpredictable.
