will self tapping screws take the rigors? i would think through bolts with bf fender washers might be the way to go

while bolts probably would be stronger, self drilling screws are surprisingly strong. i use them all the time whne im rearranging my truck bed.although i have become attached to rivets lately.

Ammo cans are useful for anything. I have a .30 caliber ammo can that I keep stashed under my backseat as a first aid kit. Those latches on the crates aren't anything special, they are just the normal toolbox style latches.

I use to put this in my roof rack since it locks I could secure stuff out of the way and made it harder for people to get into. It was a case for some kind of guided missle. I painted it white to make it not look to military when crossing the border in to Mexico.
I don't have that Land Cruiser anymore maybe I'll use it for a Geocache hide?

They are officially "medical transport chests", and you can find them at your usual milsurp outlets if you google for them. They come in a number of sizes (I think I have the smallest).

I found some on Sportman's Guide: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=336762

I'll post up some closer-up pics tomorrow. i don't think I have any currently.

They are from sportsmanguide.com as bmonday says, and he painted his, they come in olive drab, but they are FANTASTIC

I keep a lot of stuff in mine, in my trailer, if my trailer fell off a cliff, that "medical box" would survive without damage!!!

Let me dig this thread up from the depths of the basement... :D

I got to mounting my two 20mm cans today. I would have loved to get them to sit on the floor but with the bed edges being curved, I had to raise them up a bit. All in all, pretty straight forward but the 115* heat didn't really help it go any faster.

I was originally thinking of making this into a center console, but decided to wait until I found the right Tuffy on ebay. This thing is so big and I just don't know how much crap I really need to stick in the center console. Maybe if I put some dividers in it and a false bottom . . . I've seen plenty of "ammo can" center consoles, but most are the skinny .30 cal cans or the short .50 cal ammo cans which look cheap. I found a can that I like much better -> a 40mm can, I think PA-120

these measure 17" long x 6.5" wide and 10" tall - high enough for an arm rest and just as long as the stock center console (minus the part that holds the rear window and wiper switches) so it should blend in nicely. The only bad part about it is that it has a latch on both ends, whereas I need a hinge on one end. This is where I started:

and this is where I ended up with the help of 4" door hinge - the latch has resistance when closing so it should still be waterproof.

the door hinge even makes it so the lid doesn't just flop all the way back :D
