How much winch for a Disco?

I really can't complain about my setup, I run it off a dedicated ace pump, but it is still slow...Looking to use the ace pump to drive the hydro boost for the brakes and take some of the stress off the PS pump for the full hydro steering...

Awesome. Everything falling into place . . .

If I didn't go for the ultimate, I would go for the Superwinch EP9i others have mentioned above. That's the best value and a hell of a winch for the money. If I wanted to go even less expensive, I would go for the Warn M8000, also a hell of a quality winch for the money.

David

I hear what you are saying; but although the EP9 is a great winch (as is the M8000) the TDS is just leagues ahead

They are the next generation of the EP9 - as I have said before, the woman that designed the EP range is the designer of the TDS - she was so positive with the results she left her original employers to set up the production of this range

Have a peek here at what Simon Rafferty (the man behind X eng) did:

Now I know David Bowyer sells stuff to the states on a regular basis

Also never turn your nose up at a T-Max http://www.tmax.biz/
A massive engineering company who have made winches for a long old time and make parts for the biggest names in winches. Thier products are sold uinder more brand names that I have had hot dinners. The Outback range is especially good and for the money worth a punt

For those of us in the states, I sent an enquiry to first four last night, and got this reply this morning.

Is it dependent on having a particular ratio LT230, or will it work with any of the ratios?
It will work with any ratio.

Does the quoted price of £285 include VAT?
No, all prices on the website exclude VAT, please check the home page. (I missed that, oops)

If I purchase it in the UK for export, are you part of the Retail Export Scheme and able to provide the required VAT Refund Document?
Yes.

kind regards
Peter

If you ever have to use the winch in wet muddy conditions, (is there any other?) the plasma rope can be thrown or carried far esier, and if it breaks, (it happens) its far safer to be standing nearby,

I went for a Kingone 9.5 as Noni recomended, I have abused it even pulling down a few trees on our local shoot.
I was on a competition with the UK importer in Croatia the other year so I got an exellent deal.
I know a few people who have also bought them, ok they are not fast enough for competition, but unbeatable for the price.
I have used a hydo winch but the engine had to run at 2000rpm to power it.

BTW My disco 1 a 200tdi on the weighbridge shows 6000 pounds weight.

You shouldn't be standing by a winch line, synthetic or not, when it's under load.

Another advantage with synthetic for your first winch is it will let you learn a lot of bad habits without risking life and limb.

Try telling that to 100 croation locals, who are hell bent on standing in front of moving vehicles.
even standing to one side or behind I have seen wire rope and the hook go through a front screen.
the other advantage of plasma is you dont get the wire burrs sticking out to cut you, I still wear winch gloves as you can get thorns in the rope.

thanks all,

Putting things together i have:

1/ safer when fail
2/ no burr that will cut the skin
3/ lighter on the front end

I guess if there is no bad point of that synthetic rope...

I'm getting it tomorrow :)

Thanks

Greg

One down side to synthetic, and the reason I don't use it, is that it breaks. Seemingly a lot.
But certainly if you're more comfortable with it, use it. Lot's of people do.

I have always heard that it is stronger than cable, I assume that you have found that to not be the case Tom? Do you think that is because of sheer force or not winching properly and chafing?

It is stronger, but in my experience that extra strength isn't really needed. I've been using winches for over 30 years and have only had a wire rope break once. That includes electric winching to stall with one layer on the drum, winching with PTO until the shear pin fails and basically using a winch to the limits of it's pulling power.
The one cable break was on a skidder and resulted from dropping loads and stopping the free spool before the logs hit the ground which cut the cable.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's from chaffing and improper winching. On the other hand in Expedition Journal's winch test the synthetic rope broke on the very first test, or very shortly thereafter.

One the other hand, a wire rope under extreme load can be scary when you think about what it can do. So that's why I say if you feel safer with synthetic you should use it.

For me, I use my winches for more than just vehicle recovery so I'm not willing to spend the money on something that won't last. But even if I was, I would never use it were my life or vehicle depended on the rope not breaking.
