I have always heard that it is stronger than cable, I assume that you have found that to not be the case Tom? Do you think that is because of sheer force or not winching properly and chafing?
It
is stronger, but in my experience that extra strength isn't really needed. I've been using winches for over 30 years and have only had a wire rope break once. That includes electric winching to stall with one layer on the drum, winching with PTO until the shear pin fails and basically using a winch to the limits of it's pulling power.
The one cable break was on a skidder and resulted from dropping loads and stopping the free spool before the logs hit the ground which cut the cable.
Yeah, I'm
guessing it's from chaffing and improper winching. On the other hand in Expedition Journal's winch test the synthetic rope broke on the very first test, or very shortly thereafter.
One the other hand, a wire rope under extreme load can be scary when you think about what it can do. So that's why I say if you feel safer with synthetic you should use it.
For me, I use my winches for more than just vehicle recovery so I'm not willing to spend the money on something that won't last. But even if I was, I would
never use it were my life or vehicle depended on the rope not breaking.
