Unofficial J30 Jeep JKU Pop Up Thread

Interesting observation, I didn't notice that while looking at the photos. The visibility in the JK isn't all that great to begin with, so that is a definite issue.

You can order it with or without the rear side windows... They posted new interior photos BTW:

"The interior of the shell is lined with a durable black carpet. The rear shell can be ordered with or without the rear quarter glass."

I'm sure it has to do with supporting the heaver load on top, but why do all of these pup up style hard tops delete the rear window. That to me is a down side.

It's just to save money. You can get the window put in if you want to pay for it. You are talking about the two side windows, right?

I wonder if this top can be used without the rear part of the roll bar?

I doubt it as I suspect that the roll bar is what actually holds the bed up. Removing the roll bar would allow much better usage of the space in the back area.

That's one of the "big" benefits of the ActionCamper - much greater storage and space utilization - but its a much bigger and more expensive option or course.

Hal-E- I'm sure the camper porting of the top would work just fine. The fiberglass stucture is plenty stout. I would think long and hard about removing parts of the roll-bar though. its engineered to work with all pieces TOGETHER, even if you're only concerned about front seat occupants.

John, we'd love to see some quick videos of the J30 in action, pushing top up, down, entry/exit, etc. when you get far enough along to post something up. Or maybe one of the first recipients :peepwall:could do something similar.

Q&A...

…if you have to get up during the night, then the other person does too. Yea, you could unzip and go down a ladder, but where are you going to pack that?

Based on a couple nights camping, one can climb out on the spare tire pretty easy if going down through a hatch panel is not convenient. Alternately, a couple small bars on the side would be an easy way up/down in addition to the rear wheel. There are 2 hatch panels on both the Habitat & J30, (like what is used on the ECamper) to allow one to climb out while a companion is dozing away.

when do I have to forget about looking online for a roof rack and additional RTT for my JKU? When you'll switch from prototype to the marketable product for the JKU?

Depending how everything lines up in production, should start shipping Feb 2012 +/-, pricing being updated on the website.

What is the weight a J30 JK Pop-up can hold?

Sleeping area should be good to 450 lbs total +/-, rack mounts from Thule/Yakima are rated at 75 lb per bar. Much like our other pop up, the lift for the top is manual, once you’re over about 40 lbs on the bars it’ll take some muscle to get up/down but can be done.

A J30 JK pop-up version for the short JK in sight
We’ll see how the various Jeep Unlimited campers do before expanding to other sizes..

Neither the Habitat nor the J30 utilize the rear roll cage for support, so it could be removed by the Jeep owner. We’re not going to recommend doing that, but if you need/want more room without warranty or safety concerns, one option would be to do a JK8-Independence conversion which would clear out the whole back of the JK for more features like what you might see in the Earthroamer or ActionCamper.

Racks on Pop Tops

Leaving kayaks on the roof would be a big attraction to me too…its hard work for one person to lift the roof with one kayak on it and an ordeal with two kayaks

That’s the truth of it, we do a lot of kayaking so have the same goal and issue - the laws of physics are strict. The gas struts are heavy duty, but there’s still weight on the roof that has to go up. I’ve left boats on the ECamper when popping up, but that's 2 light boats (17 foot Kevlar layup) so 90 pounds going up when empty and dry. Practically, if we’re heading somewhere down in Baja we’ll have a night or two on the road with the boats on top that we just deal with until we set up a base camp, and if we have 2 boats we have 2 people to assist in the lifting/closing...

Bikes are easy though.

Does the habitat/j180 also have an accessible window ( front or rear) for those of us with car seats filling up the back seat? I'd like to make a rear ladder on my swing away to hopefully access through the rear window.

I am liking this roof option way more than the flip type! Will this roof support a light snow load, say 3-5 inches? I would think around 150 lbs. Will there be a winter pack option something like the 4 Wheel camper winter curtain?

Hi There,

Are there any internal photos of the j180 when folded down and "up"?
I'd like to see the headroom increase when it's "down", and also what's the final height when it's "up" (I'm wondering if I'll be able to stand up in the back of the Jeep - I'm 6"2')

Thanks,
-Dan

If the hatch is open and you are standing on the rear seat folded down or the storage cabinet shown in the Habitat then yes, you can stand. With room to spare. see this thread http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/59908-Jeep-Wrangler-Habitat-Official-Release. It is the same as with the J30.
Actually if you look at post #9 of that thread I was doing just that when I took those pictures; standing up through the hatch. I'm 6' 0" and not even close to the top of the tent.

Thanks for the info DK.

I didn't realize the J180 has a hatch like the J30.
Would it be possible to make a J180 where the hatch is the entire size of the "regular" jeep roof? (or at least from the back of the front seats back?).

My idea would be when folded out, the entire back of the Jeep is open, so you can essentially stand up and walk around the entire cargo area.
Obviously you would only have sleeping for 2 in the "front", over the hood.

I'd be all over something like that.

Thanks again,

-Dan
