Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

I was kind of wondering about this.

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

Well... its kinda like this. I have a tire carrier with the light mast in the picture below. Not my Jeep but its the same tire carrier. Since I have the place for a light it seemed like I should just find the best way to utilize that light mast. Here is another picture of the tire carrier...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

Here's a couple of interesting pictures I found online that really show the difference between how light is used at camp. I'd far rather hang out with the guys in the 2nd photo who only have a camp fire than the two tents with full LED lighting all around. The extra light would be nice while...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

Don't get me wrong. I'm not knocking RVs. We still use a tent, but there are certainly times I wouldn't mind having a hard sided camper. I think I would sleep better on those rainy nights in a hard sided camper than I do in a tent. I'm usually awake half the night on the lookout for water...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

We'll I'm fully convinced or should I say re-assured I would never use a bright set of LEDs at camp. Particularily since I come more from a minimalist backpacking perspective and background. Its easy to get caught up in the RV mentality and wanting all the lights and modern convenience of home...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

Its in these types of situations where I always preferred to walk in the dark. It always seemed like I could see better without the flashlight. It seems counter intuitive, but it seems like as soon as I turn on the flashlight, I can only see what is being directly lit by the flashlight. I...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

Yeah, I don't want to be the that guy. I've seen similar campsites and that always bothers me. When I first posted this thread, I was kind of expecting to get replies that this is what you guys are all doing and that I should get all the light I can on my light mast. I'll say that I have been...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

Nice. I didn't realize you could do that with the SPod. I thought they were just a fancy switch bank. That gets outside of my price range, but knowing your typically at 40% tells me a small light at 100% is probably sufficient to provide additional backup lighting. Good idea. I thought...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

Great responses from everyone. Not the responses I was expecting. I was fully expecting to hear everyone had a light on every corner of their roof rack and rock lights under every wheel. It makes me wonder who is driving those equipted vehicles with all of those lights on them. I guess I...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

Thanks guys, great responses. Jim, I think, thats a good way to say it. "as dim as possible; as bright as necessary." I think thats the balance I'm looking for. SDDiver5 also makes a great point. I'll most likely have all the lights off once I'm settled into camp. Just a campfire and...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp? Can too much light destroy the ambiance of a camp site? I have a Jeep Wrangler with the AEV tire carrier that has a light mast on the back. I'm looking into getting a light or set of lights to put on the light mast to function as a reverse...

Where is a good place to purchase a Tembo Tusk Skottle

No luck with anything discounted. I wanted it quickly for my wifes birthday though, so I didn't spend too much time looking. I picked mine up at trailrecon, but check out the link above since he is an approved vendor.

Where is a good place to purchase a Tembo Tusk Skottle

Looks like direct from tembo tusk or I found them at Trail Recon too. That's where I first saw them. I'm surprised they aren't sold at Quadratech and every offroad parts supplier.

Where is a good place to purchase a Tembo Tusk Skottle

Thanks guys. I'll check out Southwest Disk. I've never seen one in person. They just look like an easy to maintain cooking tool for the trail. I knew they were cast iron cooking surface, but I didn't know how heavy they were.

Can winter storage damage shocks like my 5160s

Thanks for your input. It really does seem like its long term lack of motion that causes the problem. As the old saying goes 'Use it or loose it'. I also have a 2002 Maxima that will sometimes sit for 2-3 weeks without being driven. That vehicle has a brake caliper that will often seize up...

Can winter storage damage shocks like my 5160s

I'm starting to see that the Fox shocks are not the end all be all that so many make them out to be. Sounds like my Billies might still be the best option for me. Do you drive your truck all winter long? I wonder how much difference it makes in regards to lubrication of the seals if it sits...
