It is the temps I worry about. I hate heat! hate to sweat! and hate to sweat while camping!

I opt for mountains and cooler temps!

I plan many short runs back to the mountains and soon! Had a great time Bill!

Thanks

Mid to late May in Utah isn't usually hot... ...dry though.
And the North Rim would just be opening again for the season; could still see some winter splooge falling there.

Wanna roll the rig down to Georgia? There's a sweet spot on a fork in the river behind the Ranger base in Dahlonega that I want to try out.

I don't have a one of all ya alls cool trailers but thought I'd throw my $.02 in on the trip. I've seen snow on Memorial day in Moab so it shouldn't be too hot. Also, there is a back gate into & out of Arches & the desert is wide open for camping there. It's shown on the Trails Illustrated map for Moab I believe. I'm pretty sure it's where Edward Abby was stationed when he wrote "desert Solitare". Anyway, very pretty country with lots of hiking & bouldering both inside & outside the park. You could also combine it with a float down the Colorado - either in your own canoes & or rafts or with a commercial outfitter.

Oh yeh, I here the 4 wheeling isn't too bad either.

You can come along with the 4WC, Doug.... ...don't tell anybody but, I've been doing a little peeking on their website...
Thanks for the info.

Let me know when you get the details hammered out - I'd love to get back to that area. It's been a couple years which is sad since I'm only about 6-7 hours away.

Since the WFTW event for Moab is an unsponsored, unofficial event, I wouldn't mind tagging along with you all. I'll be free and in that area from May 20th until May 30th. I've never been there, so it would be a nice bonus to be there with people who could show me around the area. Plus, it would be cool to meet some more people from the website in person.

Will this be the planning thread for the trip, or will you all be making a different one?

I think we'll need a new thread since I sorta hijacked poor ole Ron's...

Where are you staying along the way out west? Campgrounds or forests?
If you need a base as you wheel through Atlanta, check in at the Hotel Hilldweller...

My first choice of places will be anywhere that's free. hahahaha Barring finding something at that price, I'll move up to the next cheapest place I can find. Half a year of camping can really add up in fees, so I'm trying to cut costs where I can. KOA campsites are generally pretty nice, so I may hit up those when I want to splurge. If worse comes to worse, I could always jump on an interstate and sleep at a rest stop if I need to. Then again...I'll be rolling around in a beast of a Jeep with 40" tires, so I suppose I could just go "off-road" and camp where nobody can find me. hahahaha :D

Someone emailed me about a pretty good campsite in Moab called Slickrock and another called Canyonlands...and they have a KOA campsite just south of town.

After 14 months in Iraq, I don't really need much in the area of creature comforts to satisfy me. :)

If you make a planning thread, just clue me in on the link to it. Would be nice to check out some expedition rigs and trailers up close and in person...I'm use to generally only getting my eyes on rock crawlers and mud buggies.

Hey guys,

I've been lurking for a while and am finally trigger. The family is about two weeks away from taking posession of a new base camp, curtesy of Dean @ Jurassic. :wings:

We're in Fort Worth, TX and depending on work (out of town, etc.), I woud love to try and join you guys.

Additionally, if someone's passing through the area, there's always room to set up for a night on the way west. . . .

There an initiation or anything to becoming a happy conqueror owner?

Congrats, Gary.

Fort Worth's got some good bar-b-que.... ....how many Conquerors can you fit in your yard? :costumed-smiley-007

No initiation and there's a good support network growing.
What will you use to pull your Basecamp? Are you coming over to pick it up or having it delivered?

If he says Suby Forester I'm gonna croak.
He told me that he lived in Alaska for 15 years; I'd imagine that he's got a tow rig with sufficient heft.

I hope the economy starts to rebound and I can seriously plan our vacation to Moab. I've put everything on hold due to uncertain employment concerns...
If all else fails, these trailers will make good shanty towns. :Wow1:
