Decent 110's

You might want to check out PA Blanchard. They've had some pretty decent machines and do refurbs (as opposed to restorations), mostly ex-MoD. I'm sure they could do you a nice SIII well within your budget.

A little above your budget, but for something really different, they have a couple of Centaurs for sale (I had better photos, but accidentally formatted my CF card ).

Why does it seem to me that the prices on these rigs is going up now that they are actually 'flooding' the market place? The prices on many of those is equal to an NAS model.

I actually almost bought a legal (imported by the original owner when they moved here) 110 in about 2002 or so, it was an '86, and he could hardly get rid of it at $18k.

The trucks on that RoverDefenders site do not look like mid-1980's models -- way too nice. Unless they've all been restored.

The best guys in the UK for 110/130/90 sales abroad are these guys:

http://www.landroversuk.co.uk/

Land Rovers UK Ltd

Speak to Andy the owner

Not the cheapest but you get decent quality for your money

Andy totally put one over on a US buyer-I handled the import. He sold him a 5 door 110 that he had just converted to tdi. The engine is the only part of the truck that is still roadworthy 2 years later. The US buyer bought the truck sight unseen based on this UK dealers representations. Andy assured him it was a good solid truck-yet the bottoms of the doors were non-existant upon arrival. Andy sold him the truck for 13k. The truck is now being parted out as the frame is shot.

I actually have been thinking more about going over and picking it up and driving it around before I ship it. What better time right?

Look into UK insurance first-pricey. I have done this but was fortunate to be able to borrow a friends dealer plates or as the call them in the UK "trade plates",any vehicle they are attached to is covered.

Supply and demand I suppose? I am too starting to shop a little for a 110. Thought I would like a pickup but they are too limited when it comes to people (Ill probably have more than 2 at many points in the truck) so Ive started to think about either a 90 or 3 door 110, in diesel of course. The 90 would be great with a trailer and make a good DD around town and I could fab up some mounts for a bench seat in a 3 door 110. 5 doors in diesel are way out of my price range.

Like the PO, would it be mad to consider one as a DD and only car, assuming that I can get my hands on a 200 TDi and do some preventative right off the bat like hoses, fluids, wheel bearings, thermostat, filters, etc...? Having 2 MGs I realize that the Brits love to rust and love to act up at times but I could live with a 90 or 110 as an only car and be completely happy (all I would need is A/C really) with the spartanness of it. I can add what I need and leave out what I dont.

Here’s my 2 pence worth...

Don’t buy off UK Ebay without seeing the car, it will end in tears. If you can, come over you’ll be amazed at the availability and price of LR accessories and spares.

Rust is a real problem in the UK and LR’s are typically brought as work cars and used so. I would recommend looking to buy a LR from someone who has travelled with it, it will most likely be RHD … but will have various interesting accessories and be well looked after / loved mechanically. Often they are at the end their trip and need the cash / are open minded to help with shipping. For this try a wanted add on Horizonsunlimited.com/hubb If you want a school run car then also look at pistonheads.com

There used to be a roll-on-off ferry from Holland to NY this could be an ideal way of getting it home, not sure if its still running…

Lastly I would add LWB V8’s usually have lower mileage, often used as family cars and are cheaper than the diesel equivalent .. all due to their thirst for fuel.. and the British MOT the road worthy certificate to say a car can be driven on the road, means nothing to the real condition of the car.

Good luck Matt

Owned a S11 1959 SWB
Owned restored a S111 1979 SWB
And many other rusty British cars.

Thats true. Buying most vehicles on eBay, esp out of country, is always a risky thing.

But you can lower the risk by getting a compay like ours to view the vehicle and bid on it for you, or if you bid, you can send us the funds and we willcollect and pay for it providing its the same as described. I have done this for Doug, and his brother and for 2 others in the USA.

My 110 is my daily driver and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I've been reading this thread with great interest and just thought i'd add my £1's worth

I've owned and used landrovers all my life here in the UK, everything from series vehicles to disco 3's, and like the previous posts have said we treat them like common working vehicles, and trade them with prices to match. A week ago i sold a disco 1 300ES auto with rebuilt tdi, new ashcroft box and large intercooler for $1500, what i have noticed though is the massive price rise on dealer owned pre 85 defenders that all suddenly seem to have tdi's fitted, why because you guys are fighting for the few that exist. The truth is not many were sold in those first couple of years, but in a few years when 88/89 vehicles become an option the market will be flooded. Theres 2 parked outside my window that can go!!
