Hi there kp am looking for a seed net currently. Maybe a radiator muff is all I can get in UK. And the grass in the prop I'll pick out periodically I guess!!

Looks great, Rob! An impressive build, for sure.

A few questions for you...

Is that a Mantec upper storage shelf (link) in the rear? I didn't think they made one for the Disco 1, but only for the Disco 2 according to their website. Not sure what the difference would be, though. Did it require any modifications to install in your D1? Is it a straightforward install?

What approach did you take to repair your rear cargo floor? Any more photos of those repairs?

Any more photos featuring your rear cargo door panel and what looks like a fold-down table?

Nice work with it all! Looking forward to seeing photos from your adventures!

Hi there. Yes the rear shelf is the mantec job for a d2. All I did was fit it by eye. Rather than how the instructions say as they don't really apply. It's not difficult. All I did was use self tapping bolts. About 50mm atleast long ones that gave me the holes in the right place. Then inremoved the trim and drilled the holes out bigger and inserted rivnuts to take proper bolts. It's nice and solid up there now. The bolts that come with it are NOT long enough for the d1. And the shelf itself is a inch or so short. So out it together loosely before tightening the brackets to the Landy. This is the second one I've fitted to a d1.

As for the rear table I'll dig out some pics for you. It's a homemade job... Is there anything you want to see in particular?

The repairs to the rear were simple. Just cut out all the old rust. Replace with some panels of made. There wasn't to much. But it was enough to warrant doing the job. Fixed worse before just using a new floor.

This pic ^ I ended up making almost the length of the floor.

I'm looking forward to reading about your travels.

On the earlier air filter comment, I agree, more flow usually means more dirt in the engine.
Here's a air filter test you may find interesting for choosing a paper filter. http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html

On your snorkel you might want to consider a change in the top, especially if you're going to be in extremely wet or dusty conditions.
I'd replace the top with a centrifugal pre-cleaner. Your paper filter will last a lot longer and stay drier.
Here are some.

I'm sure there are others, but you can probably find local dealers of at least one of these in your area.
Most of these are probably available in the UK and I'm sure there are some others there.

Thanks Tom I'll look into it. I will change to paper filters but as I'm just running around UK at moment it's ok. I was looking at the different types of tips before. And had sorta settled on the idea of a spare filter or two. And a couple of the foam socks that you can get for the safari tops. Maybe even try it fitted reversed. But I can see no logic in this ultimately. Maybe another rethink!!

Thanks for comments.

Curious why you removed hitch. What you put in as replacement tow point looks like it will cut a strap pretty quickly.

Ground clearance. I don't know anyone who uses a strap without a shackle? And you should never recover using or attach a strap to a tow bar/hitch. That's how accidents happen...correct me if I'm wrong.

For the D1 most of us use the tow hitch on the back for recovery since it ties into the frame, assuming you used good spec hardware to mount what you have I think yours will be fine too.

That's ok if you have replaced with the tow ball with somthing suitable to hold a strap/shackle on the vehicle.. A tow bar/ball isn't safe for recovery for the most part in my opinion. You run the risk of it coming off, not somthing I want to happen.(again)

I will add though. There isn't much choice for d1 or d2 owners to change to. If any.

Nope you are right. I always carry d rings, just not thinking. The benefit on clearance seems tiny compared to not having a hitch.

Plus I would be inclined to trust the welds on the hitch more than two bolts. Plus the pull would be distributed on the frame in 3 points.

I have always left the hitch on, it is a great drag point. I would rather drag the hitch than anything else.

I have receiver shackle and d ring for the hitch and that is what I have always used on some rather major pulls.

Why should you never use a hitch?

Quite so, I am wondering if your spec Disco and the NAS ones are different, as for us the receiver is a perfect place to host a shackle:

A slightly absurd pic since I'd already had the kinetic rope hooked up and then ended up acting as a hasty anchor so we were looping in a soft shackle but it is illustrative. I would add that in a pinch you can feed a looped tow rope into the receiver and use a pin to hold it but that's not preferable in my book, especially when these are cheap enough and make rigging easier: http://www.amazon.com/62041-Steel-Receiver-Shackle-Bracket/dp/B000CQBMAY

Never use a hitch as in the ball type. Nas spec looks different to UK. I'll find a pic of what I had before this. And it's certainly strong enough. Been used in anger and is 50% of the original mounting for the tow plate that was there. Plus it's got a plate on the other side of chassis.

As for a drag point it has a fairly heavy duty tank guard in place you'll see why a UK spec one is not any good.
