Interestingly, one of mine doesn't leak. It scares the hell out of me!:)

i cant believe no one has touched on the WATER factor!

on a recent week long trip w/ some friends, i was the designated ice cooler carrier.
so next to my freezer i had a cooler full of ice for mixed drinks etc...

needless to say, i've forgotten how nice it is to not have to deal w/ a leaking cooler full of water. i know it sounds petty, but digging out a cooler tightly packed in the back of your rig just to drain the water out was a pain in my ass.

this is by far THE best mod for any vehicle
yes they are spendy, but it's well worth it :)

Another vote here for getting one! I have had my Engle MT35 for about six months and on two trips, a great asset for all the reasons noted above.

I do not know if mine is a later model or? but 12" wine bottles will stand upright, at the front of the cooler where the lid is thinner.

They are heavy, mine shipped at around 46 pounds.

I purchased the Engle thermal blanket and I think it makes a big difference keeping the unit cooler, running less and using less electricity when my Jeep is parked for hours.

Best of luck if you are looking for a discounted model or even a used one, they seem to be hot items, the best I could do was free shipping from Compact Appliance.

I would recommend buying the largest model you can manage. I went with the 35 thinking it was enough and have found that it fills up fast and I have warm beverages that need to be chilled or that I must use an ice chest for beverage overflow issues. My goal is no ice, only ice cream so I may end up buying a larger Engle and using the 35 for a dedicated freezer.

Engle Fridge Cup Holders

I forgot to add why I think there are cup holders formed on the lid.

My theory is that the bends in the metal help make the lid more rigid and 'they' chose round shapes for some unknown reason because the round shapes sure do not cut it as cup holders.

Engle Fridge

Besides knowing now that I should make a list of my thoughts before I post, something else I have not read in this or the other fridge threads.

The Engle I have has unique looking fuse for the 12 volt cable. It came with a spare but it looks like it might be hard to find at a off the beaten path hardware store.

They are a rare pattern, but unless you plan on losing your cord, I wouldn't consider it a remote issue. Even if you did lose it, a stop at Radio Shack could yeild you a ghetto replacement.

That said, any Engel dealer should have access to theses, some stock them ;)

Still lighter than an extra cooler full of ice...or two. :( And take up less space. :)

Good point, although I did find myself using the melted ice for washing dishes/hands etc. Well, at least the water that did not leak out, and into my sleeping bag.

As for the fuse, true it is not likely that two will be blown on one trip. A friend of mine told me about how he closed a trailer door on his 12 volt cord shorting the circuit. That is the scenario I had more in mind.

Even with the above, I will not be going back to ice and I think the Engel was a very worth the bucks item to buy.

I can not wait for the Overland Journal write-up.

Rmarz brings up a good point! On a trip through the Mojave I pinched the cord in the Fridge's slider and severed the cord. Of course, just like a good fuse should, it blew. If I had not been with El Coyote, who happend to have a pocket full of them, my ice cream would have melted and who knows if I would have ever made it out! :chowtime: With that little life lesson learned, I always carry a spare.

I love mine, always full of water, coffee grounds (to accompany the jetboil), creamer, and whatever else. I carry extra 10A fuses and usually have the ability to repair a severed power cord. I cctually picked mine up as a sratch and dent though the importer here in FL. He is down in Jupiter on the east coast. Awesome guy from South Africa. I built my own fridge slide too.
