Yeah - that's a good thought.

Do you know this guy well enough to know which fridge he had, and how much he liked or disliked his decision to mount it in the ExCab?

Don't know if this is the same guy that Dave mentioned. But BajaTaco has an excellent writeup here for installing a fridge in the cab of an xtracab.

I owned an Engel 45 for 5 years or so. Sold with my VW Westfalia that I full-timed it in for 3 years, really missed is. So when building my 98 D1 recently I read the article in the Summer 2007 Overland Journal comparing all of the latest fridges. After careful consideration and my past experience with the Engel i went for the Waeco 50, it holds 10 more cans of beer, is lighter by 29 pounds and in my opinion performs better than the Engel 45. All for an extra $25.00! After taking it on several trips to the Moab area I'm quite impressed and pleased with my decision. The big test will be 6 weeks thru Mexico to Belize and Guatemala. Hope this helps your decision.

You can get the Waeco 50 from Martyn and Mario at www.adventuretrailers.com

I know that a few folks on this board have installed them in the Extended Cab portion of the rig.

Ursidae69 installed a Waeco CoolFreeze CF-50.

The Dude also installed on behind the seats (not sure if he has any pictures).

I mounted mine behind the passenger seat (1999 Extended Cab) for the following reasons:

  1. Better weight distribution
  2. Cooler temps in the cabin when travelling due to AC
.

However I'm changing it for the following reasons:

  1. The passenger can't recline.
  2. The lid does not completely open making it more difficult to access.
  3. It's a real pain to install remove back there.
  4. It's difficult to access back there.

I'll try and get some pictures of what I did but essentially I removed the two fold down seats, seat belts and cup holder thing behind the passenger seat. The I fabricated some small brackets that mount to the seat mounting bolts. I fabricated anohter bracket that bolts to the cup holder bolt holes. I took a piece of 5/8" thick plywood approximately 18" x 29" I think and bolted it into place. The I set the Engle MT45 fridge on it and held it in place using rope and turbuckles as a temporary method untill I had a chance to iron things out. I may still use this configuration on solo trips, but I'm currently assembling parts to build a fridge slide similar to what xcmountain80 did in this thread: Engel 43 or 34 QT (start at page 4).

I'll try and post pics on the weekend.

Cheers,
P

AWESOME!!!

...Thanks guys - that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I have all my recovery gear neatly stowed behind my driver's seat (and I like it that way). I especially like the last series of pics, as my chief concern was whether or not the lid on a 45 would open all the way, or not.

This may go into the hopper of future mods.
