Fun with military tires on an 80...

With proper low gearing elsewhere, I don't know why the birf's wouldn't last a good while either. We also must remember that upgrading the birfs introduces stress points in the driveline upstream like diffs, R&Ps, flanges, prop shafts, tcases, et cetera which are much more pricey repairs than some used birfs from cruiserparts.net.

There is a lot of weight and leverage on those birfs, regardless of gearing. Drop one in a hole and bind up the drivetrain and I think the birf will be the first thing to give. Particularly if you are at full lock and/or backing up.

Oh I totally agree but IMO the birf was designed to be the first thing to give and it's a much easier/more inexpensive change than anything else that will give.

I'm thinking of this logic, tell me what you think: the weight of the tires is a concern but at super-slow speeds is nothing in comparison to a nearly 7kip listing Cruiser

The difference is of course on the increased radius which should mandate a greater moment being placed on the birfield to turn move the Cruiser the same distance. I don't remember the diameter of these tires. 38"? So assuming that and stock gearing, it's got ~22% increase in moment requirements?

I don't know which component should/could withstand those new req's best. 4.88s are a good ~19% difference as it is.

A birf should experience nearly the same static (stuck) moment delta either with a 4.88'd or 38'd vehicle?

Wow Cody, you've been busy since I last wheeled with you on the Broken Arrow trail over Memorial weekend!! I just came across this thread. I look forward to seeing your rig out on the trail again soon. It's looking good.

Cody, truck looks good !!! I have a couple of questions back to your herculiner. I have a 95 4-Runner that I have a litthe rust in rear quarters. I am planning on sanding and sealing this metal, then covering w/bedliner or undercoating material. I tried some of the arosol bedliner on a test piece, but it doesnt have the texture yours does.
Where did you get the tape w/the metal edge? at what time did you pull that tape to get the crisp line? right after painting? still wet?
You said you used the roller, right?
Thanks for your help.

The aerosol stuff would probably lay on way to thin...and would require much more masking to prevent overspray.

The roll on stuff is actually cheaper at Walmart. I was just there last night and they have the gallon kit of Herculiner for $74.

When you mix up the Herculiner in the gallon can, you can see the gritty sand (I assume its sand) in the mix.

To mask it, I used electrical tape and followed the left over lines from the fender flares. The electrical tape stretches and bends to follow curves really good. I used the blue painters tape overlapping the electrical tape.

I pulled the tape combo after about 2 hours while the Herculiner was still tacky, and it just peels away easily. I let it cure overnight (can says ready to "use" in 12 hours) and it was solid the next morning.

"You are correct, sir! YES!!!!"

HERCULINER is the only polyurethane and rubber granule coating that is applied to the bed surface using the rollers and brush included with the kit.

Well so far I can drive over random stuff with no rubbing anywhere....I dunno if I'll have to go with any bodylift. Its hard enough to get in it now!

I recently did the herculiner to my Monty and it was super easy. I actually sprayed it on using a Ceiling Texture gun and it turned out to be really easy and looked great. Just had to make sure to mask off a little more than a standard row of painters tape like you did. Also I have heard(Have not yet experienced) that herculiner tends to fade and turn from black to grey pretty quick cause of the UV Rays hitting it. I had numerous friends recommend to me to put on the UV Topcoat the Herculiner sells. It brushes on super easy as well and will keep it nice and black and is only 20 bucks. Picked mine up at local Carquest.

The cruiser looks great by the way. Cool build.
