How much winch for a Disco?

So Defenders must have a lot more room down there. How much extra is required?
Not sure exactly, it's been a while.
Here's a Superwinch LT230 hydraulic pump, it'll give you an idea of what you space you need.

Yeah, that ain't gonna fit in a Disco without significant work to the floorpan. Don't get me wrong, it could be done, but you'll lose the center seat floorspace. You know how the rear floor of a Disco is flat right across? That's why the PTO won't fit.

Winching with no alternator supply to a battery mostly urban legend. Take an 8274/50 first year of manufacture with the X50 motor (the only warn motor to actually do what it says on the tin). At just below stall it will be drawing well over 400amps - even on no load it's pulling up to 70amps. When you run winches on dieing batteries you kill the motor.

Thanks for all your input. It's true, Brits live and breathe winches. Amazing the difference. Here, winching is mark of shame. In the UK, you guys purposefully setup winchfests.

Wonder if it would work better in a pinch to set up two batteries in series, to achieve 24V? I believe most winches can take 24V, and the motors would be much happier even at 22V under load.

That Superwinch unit looks a lot bigger than the unit First Four is offering. Still, floor modification would be required. First Four does offer a dedicated pump that runs off the engine too. It's set up for a 200/300 Tdi, but could probably be fitted to the V8 somehow.

Word of warning. If you uprate the speed and pull of the MM check the welding on the drum end plates. I know of a handful of the UK MM hi-speed/hi-power challenge guys who have had drums fail and take out the gearbox end of the winch chassis.

Mind you 284 feet a minute and God knows how much pull can certainly bring issues to the surface

That was Mike Findlay. It was a maxidrive product that came through GBR.
It was an adapter that let you fit a standard hydraulic pump.

But Maxidrive is no more.
These people took over production of the adapter but it doesn't appear on their web site. I've sent them an email to see if it's still available.

The above picture is from these people http://4x4winches.com/index.php?page=winch_systems.htm so maybe they still have some.

Wow 6 pages and no one tried the obvious wench joke!? This place is too polite:costumed-smiley-007

Ok, ok I'll take the lead.....in a disco one is enough as any more and they just get jealous of each other...there it's been told, we can all move on..
