If you had to sell one?

last 100 vs 80 discussion...looking for another 80
Okay, I'll say it in here, but please don't berate me:

The 80 is a better trail rig. I own both and have taken both across terrain from low-desert to altitude and everywhere in-between. The 100'll do it all day long too, but there's no doubt in my mind the 80 does better in nearly every situation when off-highway save maybe some high-speed washboards.

Don't get me wrong, I'm way pro-Hundy and it simply shines in other arenas that are just as important like comfort, much-needed AC, and actually getting to where you want to go off-highway before you run out of fuel and the last cassette tape of Chris LeDoux.

Another one for which I'll take flack: A live front axle helps significantly despite it's inherent other problems; this just isn't in rock-crawling. It can mean a big difference in getting out many backcountry trails.

And something near and dear (not) to me about the Hundy is it's bias towards the rear brakes on light braking. If you like to drive at (what I consider) reasonable speeds in the ice/snow, it takes one a good while to get used-to.

Or perhaps you meant the OTHER one:)

Sell them both, and get a newer 100 series with proper equipment like TRAC and VSC.

Funny, you didn't mention anything about shocks...:wings:

I would never berate anyone who mentions Chris LeDoux in a Landcruiser thread.

Question - If you're entertaining the idea of a domestic rig for a build, what difference does it make whether the 80 or the hundy is better off-road? I mean if your intention is to use something new for the family off-roader?

It doesn't, I'm just adding a little flame onto the 80/100 debate ;) other than either of them would beat a full-sized on the trail IMO.

Seems like the 100 owners are recomending the 80's and the 80 owners recomending the 100 for the vehicle to keep.

Whichever vehicle you do keep, do you plan on keeping it for the long haul? If so, which of the two is that vehicle? To me the 80 is the more timeless one that I'd want to pass on to my kid some day. Both of your rigs are sweet though and I'm sure no matter what, you'd be psyched with one or the other.

Maybe some warranty too?

Well, I have been getting on the more serious side of a domestic full-size :) .

Do you mean like a Ford Excursion with 8" of lift, 40" Mud Diggers, lots of chrome and one of those flat satellite antennas on top??

:lurk: We know you secretly like the Bling!

I'd keep the 100 (ducking for cover)!!

Having a family and making sure that they're comfortable while actually *accelerating* up a hill is pure ecstasy. If someday, you get a trailer then the extra power is nice.

Stuffing a family into an 80 with the gear, looking cool and hugging the right lane while the 18 wheelers blowing by, is very very sad. Another words, getting outrun by a three year old on a tricycle is about my speed in my 80 :( and it's very sad but it is what it is.

Just my .02

I would get rid of the one that would sell for the most money. Then you still have a nice rig either way and a pile of cash.

If both vehicles are _equal_ in your eyes, then sell the 100. It'll sell for more money and you won't lose much in vehicle capability.

I'd check into how much of a premium the 100 is over the 80. I'd guess about $7k more.

I just don't see it this way. I doubt the price difference is that much and in 10 years a good condition 96 will be worth more money than a good condition 98 or 99.

I think you're saying the same thing I am. I said to sell the 100. I assume that's what you mean when you say a good condition 80 will be worth more in 10 years, you are also saying that he should sell the 100 now. Correct?

A 100 will definitely sell for more than an 80 of comparable condition right now. Down the road who knows...
