Man - I feel for you. Having some similar "introductions" with my 40. Bent and cracked the exhaust just south of the manifold, tore the tire carrier latch completely away from the body (along with a 2"x12" section of hidden and rusted out body panel), and my transmission is locking itself out any gear randomly (and once locking itself in reverse).

I'll admit the 4 speed issues have me a bit bummed. I don't have the confidence to take it far from home right now.

Hope you get yours back on the road soon - the cold weather will be back before we know it.....

The Downey trick is a new one on me. How did he come up with that one?? I had heard about ATF and was using that. The moaning was worse when temps were below freezing. Wasn't too bad this summer.

I won't be adding anything or going anywhere until the radiator is replaced. The 60 is a sitting target for the pigeons in the neighborhood at the moment.

jacket- sorry to hear about the troubles. Still, working on a classic 'Cruiser beats cleaning out the gutters or staining the deck. And don't jinx us with that winter crap.....

  • Radiator - Gave up the ghost (and anti-freeze) in July. A replacement is in the order bank.

If you have not yet ordered, get a 3- or 4-core.

Heavy duty 4 row. A suggestion from some guy who used to have a 60.

And now all he has is seller's remorse......:peepwall:

Dude, I still can't believe you let it go. And I can't imagine why dg gave you the green light to do so.... T'was a 40 of beauty, that one.

Yes it was...

Could have been the 1997 FZJ80 with 40K miles and the N2A trip ;)

Hope to see you and your beauty in WY :smiley_drive:

Talking about identity crises, what's up with the greeny tag?

The PO's plates and screws were covered in ice when I picked it up, so we just left them on. His tags were paid up through July, so I rode them as long as I could. Two days after I paid to get it registered here, the radiator crapped out.

BTW, in what state are you living these days?

It is August...in Phoenix...AC at 86F. (to the tune of "look...you have a baby...in a bar")

I reside between the states of denial and heat-induced insanity.

While I was still in a decision making mindset, I came across this thread. Thank you KC for making my decision very easy. I've found the perfect vehicle.

Now, to come up with $5,000. :lurk:

Well, look who's back....

After sitting on the shelf for most of the winter while funds were being saved and maintenance was needed, we are out Cruising the trails once again. As intended, the mods have been kept to a minimum. The Engel 45 is on board, as is the Columbus RTT. I also bought a spare Wyoming Gazetteer to keep in the 60 and that's about it. I am bouncing around the idea of getting another swing arm made for the rear bumper, to hold two fuel cans. Adding a XM receiver will complete the project. For now...

The desert here is incredibly green from the 3 weeks of steady rain we've been experiencing. We need the moisture, but it's getting old.... I'm about ready to ditch the RTT and swap on a canoe. If the rains don't stop soon, I'm quitting my job and building an Ark....

There are still a few minor things with the 60 that I need to address, like a windshield that cracked this winter, a broken passenger side windshield wiper that doesn't work, a sticky window regulator and a driver's seat with 235K miles on it. All in all, it's a great ride. It draws more attention than I prefer, but I can't blame folks. I often catch myself staring out the window at it too...
