yesterday I took care of the rack and pinion replacement because it was getting pretty bad, that also gave me a good oppertunity to change all my fluids, well most of them after the rack replacement I flushed the P/s fluid with AMSOIL synthetic ATF, I change the T case with AMSOIL Severe Gear oil. and then front and rear diffs with Valvoline Synthetic for Limited Slip. Now that I got these out of the way I can start on some modifications. next thing is where to start!

I think the first thing I am going to do is some suspension work. I am thinking 5100 for the simple fact they seem to work, have a good folowing and wont kill the piggy bank. I would really like to upgrade to some fancy new upper control arms and some of the coil overs but I just dont really do enough wheeling yet to have to worry about those. I have a hunting trip in 2 weeks so until then no $ can be put into the truck than needed plus the rack setup really ate into my shock fund.

When I got my tundra it had a spacer lift up front and the 1 st thing I did was replacing the upper arm with a camburg one. Corrected caster due to lift.

Just Friday i got rid of the spacer lift for 5100 and have to say I love it. Ride feels smoother thru bumps at speeds. Firm shock compared to factory which I like.

Good thread and Info..
will be interesting to see which way you will turn.

Mine is a 06 Double Cab and its been amazing to discover that I have had to recently replace the lower control arms due to the factory bushings providing to much slop. All of the bushings on the steering rack have been replaced with the poly bushings plus the sway bar rubbers. Went with the uniball upper arms and the Icon coil overs. Here is where you want to get specific as I did not realize they would put 600# springs on them and they sagged within a month before the discovery. So rounded up some 700# ones and so far they are holding up. (keep in mind I have the full set of Skid row skid plates, Weld on sliders, Dual batteries, plus the ARB front bumper, but no winch yet till I do the front frame fix.)so its heavy up front.
Did a high speed run down a 20 mile section of washboard road and it handled it well.
Front suspension is finally tight and handles like it is on rails.
3 leaf hd add a leafs for the rear with 5100's
Fuel mileage questions are for the birds if you have to ask I would say go by a prius. My truck is for the fun and offroad capabilities.

Turkey?

What kind of mileage are you getting with your Tundra?

I am heading to a ranch in Souther Missouri for some ferrel hog hunting. Over the past year I have been building my rifle and spaced the trip off a bit and now suddenly its here have a group of about 5-8 guys all going.

For MPG I have only done city driving and its been 10 or so. I also start the truck in the morning when I let the dog out so when I drive to work its not super cold.

Rambrush: Your suspension setup sounds like something that I would like to do to be ideal but like I said I don't do major off roading yet so it kind of a waste of suspension on a truck that will never get used to its full capacity.

When I replaced the rack I punched out the soft OE type bushings they had installed and I used the ones I ordered from Wheelers they were some Energy Suspension ones. I installed those into the new rack before I put it in place. At the same time I inspected the sway bar bushings and they were perfectly fine so no need to worry about those yet.

You said you have sag with skid row plates I wonder when I put on my 5100 if I should consider some OME coil overs to make up for the weight of truck/bumper/any other crap I plan to add in the future.

No matter which manufacture you go with ask and make sure they have the correct springs, A buddy has a 04 access cab and he is running the 600# springs his is now sagging. he does not have the skid plates or dual batteries so keep that in mind.
Seems like they are thinking Tacos instead of Tundras.
Just do it right the first time as each time things come apart its another alignment. Also a trick on the front steering rack is to use a die grinder and cut a slot as the upper is sort of hard to get a wrench on.

Nice truck and welcome to the club! Given the age/mileage of the truck, I think you haven't seen anything unexpected, just a couple normal wear parts. I'm with you - I shopped around for a month looking for the best deal I could find on a Gen 1 Tundra because they are simply the best made truck available.

Keep posting up your build information - I need to get a thread going myself!

Thanks for the kind words i plan on starting some work once I get finished with the hunting trip. I am also thinking of building my own soft topper and using a canvas tarp as the cover like the old military covers

I dont have much of a update. I have been trying to find a topper for my truck I found one about a full days round trip I tried to strike a deal with the owner but he does not want to budge one bit on the price of the topper. Otherwise I am still waiting for the right week to order some 5100 and some lift blocks for the rear.

Congrats on the acquisition of the truck! These Tundras are a challenge to find good aftermarket parts for, but there's all sorts of repurposed stuff out there. Go poke around the Tundrabirds thread for ideas and sources. I'm posting on mobile, so I'll come back with a link to it.

Any particular reason you're going for leveling blocks instead of just upping your load capacity in the rear? FWIW, I find that my 05 AC droops low with a couple hundred pounds of RTT, rack, and kit over the rear leaf springs. I do tend to bottom out to the stops back there, even on tame trails. Just food for thought, dude.

Edit: LINK!

Yes thats the biggest thing I am running into its a HUGE PITA should have bought a tacoma for the amount of additional add ons but I just dont think I can go without a fullsize esp coming out of my 1500HD silverado.

No real reason why I think blocks over springs due to cost I would really like to do new rears along with new OME up front.
I have been searching CL in all the surrounding states to find anything and I have been coming up short. I have seen some of the tundrabirds thread
