Sears Diehard Differences?

When I picked up one of mine, I brought in a (dead) $12 scooter battery for the core, and that was sufficient. That could be an option if they insist on a core.
I've really had great luck with my local Sears. When I first began reading about the Platinum batteries on the forums here, I hopped in my X and drove over. Said I needed a Platinum battery. I wasn't able to give them the old battery for the core charge, since I needed the factory battery to get back home and install the new. The nice attendant said "No problem! Bring it in when you can." Left for a trip that week and promptly forgot about the battery...for a couple of years...hidden by the other gear in my garage. Was dropping a new battery in my folks car when I found it again. Took it and my folk's old battery at a local parts store for disposal. Felt some minor guilt about not returning the core to Sears, especially since some of their "customers" abuse their tool return policy and discounts. The sales are tracked electronically and they've never said anything to me when I've made recent purchases, including a new motorsport battery for my ATV. I am quite happy with my Platinum battery and my X has not balked at starting, even with the recent below zero weather we're having here in southwest Ohaiya. I'm seriously considering putting another Platinum battery in the truck as a house battery. Just need to figger out where to squeeze it in under the hood.

The Sears Platinum (the automotive version) is no more. :(

It looks like they went to a different source for their AGM battery (Diehard Advanced Gold AGM Battery). According to one guy on the ih8mud forum they are Deka Intimidator AGM's. I don't know if that is true but according to Consumers Report they are THE WORST AGM's in the CR testing (see link below). That just sucks. Sears had sourced arguably THE BEST battery to slap their name on and now they got penny wise and pound foolish.

I hope the Platinum battery is not discontinued. The Die Hard Gold AGM IS the Deka intimidator series, and their specs in terms of CCA, self discharge and amp hours per weight and maximum recharge current is not impressive, not in comparison to Odyssey anyway.

The deka's want no more than 20 amps initial recharge current for a 100 amp hour battery and are not to exceed 14.5 volts. So much for the quick recharge AGM.
My vehicle's charging system will exceed both these parameters so I never considered them. They might be a good solar only battery, but the self discharge curve is not much better than flooded batteries, so it appears the only real advantage of the Deka Intimidator is the spill proof/ no offgassing factor. Probably still way better than the Asian AGM's like Universal Battery, which also have limited recharge current, and not impressive CCA or self discharge. Of the two, at least the Deka are made in the USA, and if bought through sears as a DH gold, similar price.

My Group 27 NorthStar has not seen any charging currents for 2 days now. It is resting at 13.06v. So far I have been impressed with its ability to crank my v8, and to power all my house loads, when I task it with that duty

They still have the Sears Platinum. They just now have another AGM available marketed as their Advanced Gold AGM. I picked up a Diehard Platinum P5 today for my Tundra but the salesman kept trying to convince me all I needed was the Advanced Gold because it was still an AGM but was much cheaper (I wish they had a larger Platinum in stock while I was there). As far as I know the Odyssey and Diehard Platinum are still the same.

Been looking at the Sears Diehard Advanced Platinum AGM (Odyssey) 34/78 #51090 for my van and see all Diehard batteries are on sale right now, 20% off.

Regular price $230, sale price $184 and can save another $5 with promo code...

The Diehard Advanced Gold AGM is an East-Penn/Deka battery.

I bought the 34 series in December and love it. Wasn't aware they had a 34 series until I went into sears with an intent to buy the 34/78. Ended up paying $155 for mine which couldn't have made me happier.

What's wrong with double terminal. Sears only carries the 34/78 now.

I did read reviews somewhere at one time that the side terminals would break off. Don't know how valid that is or how often that occcurs. Just what I read.

Cost is same and just don't use the side terminal. I have the 34/78 and I use both terminals with no issues for 4 years now. Winch goes to side terminal even tho it's not recommended
