Do a compression test. Also, when was the last time the timing belt was done? One of the must dos on the 5vz.

I dug into a 5vz block last night with 190k on the clock. The only signs of engine wear were on two of the camshafts. Amazing. Valves were dirty, but when cleaned up, looked like new. Crank looked similar, no signs of wear. I guess "aim small miss small" works in manufacturing!

SOrry to get off topic. This discussion has piqued my interest.

Timing Belt was done at 90K and 180K.

No worries about getting off topic, it is how my mind wanders also. Sure I have thought of a diesel swap before, doesn't fit my needs. Then you tack on the cost, time of install, and parts availability, then it really doesn't fit needs. Heck, I found another same year Tacoma with 63K miles on the clock, for around $12K. Could buy a complete other vehicle for the cost of a diesel swap.
