Do a compression test. Also, when was the last time the timing belt was done? One of the must dos on the 5vz.
I dug into a 5vz block last night with 190k on the clock. The only signs of engine wear were on two of the camshafts. Amazing. Valves were dirty, but when cleaned up, looked like new. Crank looked similar, no signs of wear. I guess "aim small miss small" works in manufacturing!
