What spare parts do you carry in your FG140?

Responding to Olsurfer's post regarding the CPS got me thinking again about what spare parts I should be carrying. With my Ford, there were a few odd things like a spare CPS that I would't leave home without because they were known failure points.

What should I be carrying that is unique to our trucks? (I have a 2005 FG 140 SWB) A set of filters, belts and hoses are no brainers but what are the oddball things that you would like to have if it was long hike to civilization? I asked this question to the mechanics at Portland Mistu-Fuso and they said you might want a u joint because that failure would stop you in your tracks. Most other things you can limp to help with.

What is in your spare parts box? Any special tools needed to replace those parts would be helpful as well (such as an 800 pound gorilla to loosen the lug nuts).

I've got some comments on a thread here regarding the effectiveness of a torque multiplier. They are ineffective. I now have a gasoline powered impact wrench. It's too bulky to carry routinely.

I hate trying to search on this forum, so if you have a link to that thread Kerry, maybe you can add it here.

I have been looking at getting one of this style of torque multiplier for a while now, so I would be interested in your comments on them. I would see them as only being useful in loosening the nuts, as I doubt that I would ever use them for tightening the nuts. I am also looking at getting a good torque wrench for doing up the nuts, but have not decided on which one as yet.

I got one of these : http://www.tooltopia.com/precision-instruments-c4d600f.aspx It's a split beam clicker that doesn't have to be unadjusted after use. It's four feet long but breaks down into three pieces. It also torques in both CW and CCW directions by flipping the head around. It's plenty accurate for lug nuts. From the companies web site:

"Split-Beam Click Wrenches overcome many of the problems associated with micrometer-style clock wrenches in abusive environments. The wrench has few components, and all critical parts are welded together at assembly. There is no need to "work in" a C series torque wrench before using it the first time. Nor is it necessary to adjust to the lowest torque setting after use. Setting the tool requires only fingertip force since the adjustment mechanism is not under load."

"Stock bar"? So just out of curiosity do the Oz trucks new come with all the fixings to change a tire out? Here in NA they dont give you anything at all, no jack, bar.........................nothing except some straps in the cab where that stuff is supposed to go! It is because the dealers and manufacturers are afraid that if you were supplied with them that would mean they expect you to change your own tire and if you got hurt doing that you could sue them!! So the expectation is that you will call a profesional to do a tire change and that is sooo lame!

I carry the usual belts and a spare fuel filter, I have not come up with much else to bring as I havent found anyone to mention anything else. The fuel filter was a result of Lehel's to do when his truck went into limp home mode a while back, having a big breaker bar of some type to get the wheel lugs off is absolutly needed, I like a low tech approach to the torque wrench like what ft/lbs torque would a 100kg weight placed six feet along a bar be making? Has anyone said duct tape yet, or baling wire and even some heavy duty plumbers tape, is there anything else that would be good to have?

Items that I want before leaving the country: -Workshop manual and parts manual
-OBD reader and a way of clearing the codes
- spare ??????

there just doesnt seem to be much stuff failing on a regular basis on these trucks.

I hate searching too. :) All the torque mulitplier did for me is bust in two a 1"-3/4" impact adapter. Didn't loosen the lugs. If someone has hammered them on with an impact wrench, it's probably going to take a big strong impact wrench to get them off. I got new tires last year. I insisted they use a manual wrench and not an impact to tighten them. Idiots tightened with an impact. Their rationale--they couldn't find the correct torque setting for the torque wrench so used the impact. Total nutjobs. How would they get them correct with an impact then? Got in a big tusstle with them. I said I'm not taking my truck until you loosen them with the impact and re-tighten with a hand wrench. They said no--too much of a liability. I said--I'll sign anything you want but I'm not taking it until you loosen them. Finally, I signed a release, they loosened them and I tightened them with my own wrench. But this didn't include the inside dual so I'm guessing I won't be able to loosen those myself. Won't be using them again for tires.

Well, I cannot speak for all trucks, but mine definitely came with all the necessary gear to change out a tyre.
I think that here it is a legal requirement to carry the necessary equipment to replace a tyre, but don't quote me on that...

The TA/Petro truck stop chain has become very diligent about lug nuts. They oil the threads and hand torque. They will also re-torque them for free at any location within a specified time/distance.

that's awesome, do you mean to say in the states if you get a flat in the middle of bum ******k nowhere the dealer will come out and change your tyre
that's great, talk about service
here in Oz they give you a pissy little jack and a pathetic little wheel spanner and your on your own
me I carry a 3/4"drive rattle gun as well as the mandatory 5' length of tube
think we'll all have to move to the US
