Porsche Cayenne - SNORKEL THREAD

Once a month I travel over to the local Land Rover dealership to run their introductory customer class. Today I ran into THIS VEHICLE as posted in an earlier thread: http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5572

A fun rig for sure but just a bit irritating. Apparently any clown in a Cayenne can obtain a snorkel, but I can't get one for my Tacoma?!
I will now light myself on fire...

I think you can buy it in a race-prepped package. They had a mini-sight for it at one time. Was pretty sweet.

Oh and I see you can now get Safari Snorkles for the old rangers......but not the new tacoma....

Cayenne a success for Porsche

When Porsche introduced the Cayenne in 2002 there were plenty of nay-sayers. The Porsche Board of Directors has been laughing all the way to the bank ever since.

I think that the Cayenne is the best-selling of all models in Porsche's lineup. Porsche just built Cayenne number 200,000. That's more Cayennes per year than Boxters, which took 2 years longer to reach the 200,000 plateau.

The option sheet for the Cayenne has lots of useful goodies for travel on marginal roads: low range, locking center and rear diffs, skid plates and rock rails, height-adjustable suspension (up to 10 inches clearance), Dynamic Chassis Control (a system that controls the roll bars for best results on and off road), traction control, and so on. The Transsyberia rally cars had a wading depth of 30 inches, thanks in part to the snorkel.

The price of a fully-optioned Cayenne approaches $95,000, affordable for rock stars. I guess it will be a few years before used car prices are affordable for the rest of us.

This dealership complex is by United Auto which is basically owned by Roger Penske. He has a "Historic Car Museum" that basically displayes all of Penske Racing's Indy 500 winners... and a few other race cars. I suspect this Cayenne is now part of his collection. Maybe he was even one of the team sponsors.

Hey Richard, doesn't your local LR dealership do this? I started doing trips and classes for the Scottsdale dealership in 1997. It's a pretty fun gig! Customers show up... do I a 15 minute segment on vehicle prep and trip planning... about 30 minutes in the shop where we look at vehicles on the lift and discuss vulnerable locations on each and driving techniques to limit the risks... finally they have a fairly extensive demonstration track where the customer drives while I talk them through each obstacle.

Yesturday was particularly fun because I had a complete range of people/vehicles: a younger guy who just picked up a clean 1995 D90 to a 70ish lady driving a '08 Supercharged RR Sport.

If you ever in Phoenix on the first Saturday of the month, you can stop by and I can get you in!

True. But have seen a few of it's close sister Touareg. There's one here in Denver that sports a full belly skid pan, 17" rims with BFG ATs, and sliders. The few times I've seen it, looks that it wears a few battle scars even. There's a Touareg owners group that has a week long rally in SW Colorado every year, taking their VWs on the trails. Probably nothing 4+ or 5 rated, but even just driving 3 and 4 rated trails is more than 99% of all Toyotas, Rovers and Jeeps ever do.

I would expect that if someone had the money, there's no reason that a Cayenne couldn't be made into a passable OHV. I think the biggest obstacle on the Cayenne is that I'm not sure it can run the 17" VW wheels and clear the brakes, so running 18" or 19" rims would mean a very limited choice of real tires.

Honestly Greg I couldn't tell you if any of the dealesrhips do this stuff near me. I've only been to a stealership once since I've owned my Rover. For the most part DIY and indie shops have been my preference.

I've only heard of the Land Rover Experience events and independent driver training/trip places like Off Roving. I did stumble across some photos of a owner of a new LR3 that rolled his truck in the local mountains who was apparently with a few guys from a local dealership although I'm not sure which.

If I ever make it out to Phoenix for what ever reason i would definitely like to see what goes on in one of these classes. Do you charge people for them or is it free with the purchase of a truck?
