Rob O's Overland Tacoma ...

First, introductions. I'm a life-long 4wheeler who's always had an "adventure" vehicle of some sort, whether an all-weather family hauler aimed more at getting there than getting away or a lifted and kitted rig built to go anywhere. I have fond memories of helping my dad build our '69 Bronco as a teenager and learning how to drive in it at 14 in the back country of Colorado and those experiences have carried with me since.

I also have an affinity for European cars, which is where my time and resources have gone the past decade or so. Now I've added a 2007 Tacoma DC 4x4 TRD OR to the garage and it's time to tinker ... in the name of increasing functionality as much as enhancing looks. More on what's planned below.

've been lurking on ExPo for a while now and appreciate all the great information. There are so many great vehicles here and the expedition logs are fun to follow. Of course I also hit the usually places for Taco owners, from TTORA to Toyota Nation to Custom Tacos, but you have to weed through a lot of crap to get useful info. I also love that ExPo is oriented to my style of offroading and offroad vehicles; something built to be comfortable enough to enjoy "getting there" and capable enough to actually use when you arrive. In other words, an expedition or overland rig.

I considered the FJ Cruiser and Wrangler Unlimited in addition to the Tacoma. In the end, as this is a "third vehicle", I decided the truck offered more utility for things like Home Depot runs, hauling landscaping/trash, toys for the boys (ATVs/dirt bikes), etc. And with three kids, including an infant, the rear doors provide easier access to rear seats than the FJ's while the rear seating area is more comfort than the JKs.

So, as I'm ready to begin my build, I figured I'd register and begin a "Rob O thread." :wavey:

(as of) Feb 19, 2008: Stock Radiant Red Tacoma DC 4x4 TRD Off-Road (AT), purchased late-July 2007.

Coming:
OME 885/N140S (886s if/when I do bumper/winch)
OME Dakar + N182 and drop bearing kit
TW one-piece drive shaft
New bump stops
265-70/17 BFG ATs or 285/70/17 Discovery STT
In-dash NAV/DVD/XM/Rear Cam (done)

Topper (maybe; I like having the bed open)
...

Here are a couple of shots from last year:

Here are my other rides ...

2004 BMW M3 Coupe with a few mods; she can now sit safely in the garage during the week while the truck serves as my daily driver.

2007 Acura MDX Sport/Techno -- the family truckster. Great SUV for those who need a minivan with SUV styling and characteristics (AWD, towing capacity, etc) but still want something oriented toward a "driver's vehicle" (read: sporty).

And, finally, a few of my past "overland" toys ...

2004 Jeep Liberty with 2.5" Skyjacker c/os and Wrangler MTs. This was an awesome little vehicle, at least for what I needed ... which was hauling the wife and two young boys to the trail then being able to handle back country duty. Unfortunately, it was too small to use as a DD and with an larger SUV in the garage (wife drove a Volvo XC90, I had an Audi S4 Avant) it wasn't seeing enough use to warrant keeping. I miss her now.

1998 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0 OHC 4x4 with 2.5" lift and BFG AT KOs, WAAG brush guard, FET lights and a customer gear box in the back. People were surprised how deep I'd take this pig.

here (only shot I could find off-hand, taken just after I lifted it with BFGs not mounted yet. I'll have to dig up some trail shots)

1994 Exploder 4.0 OHV XLT 4x4 with 2" lift and BFG ATs, WAAG brush guard, FET lights. Again, this vehicle saw plenty of off-pavement use ... unlike most Explorers.

Uh oh - the red ones are starting to take over. :truck:

Nice truck - that thing shines! Nice looking MDX as well - my wife drives one and I can't get her to trade it in for a 100 series....
